The Commander

Flying

When Koya enters, exile up to one other target creature. At the beginning of the next end step, you may pay {3}{B}. If you don't, return that card to the battlefield under its owner's control.

Guide

Gameplan

Koya is a recursive flying removal engine: she exiles a creature on ETB, and if you pay {3}{B} at end step it stays gone forever, otherwise it bounces back triggering its own ETB. You leverage flicker effects to re-trigger Koya as repeatable removal, abuse your own creatures' enter-the-battlefield abilities, and grind value while chipping in with evasive Ninja beats. Win by out-valuing the table with blink loops or assembling an aristocrats/ninjutsu engine and closing with flyers.

Strengths

  • Repeatable creature removal/disruption that scales with cheap flicker effects
  • Flexible: temporary exile dodges death triggers and combat, or pay to make it permanent
  • Cheap 3-mana evasive commander that's hard to block and supports Ninjutsu
  • BW gives the format's best targeted removal and recursion to back up the engine

Weaknesses

  • Removal is one-creature-at-a-time and does nothing against artifacts, enchantments, or planeswalkers
  • Paying {3}{B} every turn is mana-intensive and competes with your gameplan
  • Koya only exiles on ETB, so without flicker you get one shot per cast and she gets pricey to recast
  • Vulnerable to commander hate; bouncing her resets the exile and lets the creature return

Key Cards

  • Ephemerate — Cheap, rebound-having flicker that re-triggers Koya twice to exile two more creatures.
  • Conjurer's Closet — Free end-step blink each turn turns Koya into a repeatable removal machine.
  • Flickerwisp — Blinks Koya to exile another creature and itself can tuck threats temporarily.
  • Restoration Angel — Flash flicker protects Koya from removal while exiling an attacker mid-combat.
  • Cloudshift — One-mana flicker that retriggers Koya's exile and dodges spot removal.
  • Anguished Unmaking — Covers Koya's blind spot by removing the noncreature permanents she can't touch.
  • Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful — Strong Ninjutsu/aggro partner enabler giving Koya a low-cost evasive support package.
  • Karmic Guide — Reanimates a creature and pairs with sac/flicker loops alongside Koya for value.

Upgrade Path

Lean into cheap, recurring flicker (Ephemerate, Conjurer's Closet, Restoration Angel, Ghostly Flicker) and high-impact ETB creatures so Koya generates value beyond removal. Add fast mana and ramp (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Smothering Tithe) to comfortably pay the {3}{B} tax every turn, plus tutors like Vampiric Tutor and Demonic Tutor to find your engine pieces. For a sharper finish, include an aristocrats payoff package (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat) or a blink-based combo to convert your value engine into a hard kill.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Grind the board to ashes with repeatable Koya removal, then win with evasive flyers and Ninjas
  • ▸Assemble a blink loop with strong ETB creatures to generate overwhelming card and board advantage
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via repeated death/blink triggers (e.g., Blood Artist effects)
  • ▸Beat down with a buffed Voltron-style Koya backed by protection and evasion

Archetypes

  • Blink — Flicker effects re-trigger Koya's exile for repeatable removal and abuse friendly ETBs.
  • Control — Koya plus BW removal locks the board by exiling key creatures and paying to keep them gone.
  • Ninjas — Her Ninja typing and flying enable Ninjutsu to swap in big ETB threats while staying evasive.
  • Aristocrats — Temporary exile and flicker pair with sac outlets and death-trigger creatures for grindy value.
