The Commander

Double strike

Creatures you control with first strike have double strike.

Guide

Gameplan

Kwende turns your mono-white army into a wall of double strikers, then attacks for lethal damage with go-wide or buffed creatures. Curve out cheap first-strike knights and anthem effects, give Kwende evasion or protection, and punish blockers with first/double strike combat math. You win by overwhelming the board with efficient, hard-to-block creatures.

Strengths

  • Cheaply doubles damage output across your whole board via first strike granting
  • Mono-white knight and aggro synergies are plentiful and budget-friendly
  • First strike makes combat heavily favor you, deterring blocks and saving creatures
  • Strong commander damage clock with double strike on a 4-mana body

Weaknesses

  • Mono-white lacks card draw and ramp, leading to running out of gas
  • No built-in evasion makes Kwende easy to chump-block or wall off
  • Vulnerable to board wipes that erase your invested army
  • Removal-heavy or high-life-gain pods can blunt the aggressive plan

Key Cards

  • Adriana, Captain of the Guard — Battle cry plus first strike on her makes her a double-striking anthem that grows your whole team.
  • Mardu Skullhunter — Representative of cheap first-strike bodies that become double strikers under Kwende; prioritize first-strike creatures.
  • Haktos the Unscarred — First strike plus double strike and near-unkillable evasion make him a devastating Kwende beater.
  • Brave the Sands — Vigilance and extra blocks let your double strikers attack and still defend.
  • Sword of Fire and Ice — Grants protection and value while doubling the trigger damage with double strike.
  • Akroma's Will — Mass evasion, protection, and double strike all at once for a surprise lethal swing.

Upgrade Path

Add white's best card advantage (Welcoming Vampire, Esper Sentinel, Skullclamp) and ramp (Smothering Tithe, Sol Ring, Mana Crypt) to fix mono-white's fuel problems. Lean into protection and evasion—Swords, Mother of Runes, Flawless Maneuver, Heroic Intervention analog Teferi's Protection—so your investments survive wraths. Tighten the curve toward efficient first-strike creatures and anthems to maximize Kwende's doubling.
