The Commander

Horsemanship (This creature can't be blocked except by creatures with horsemanship.)

Guide

Gameplan

Lady Zhurong is a near-unblockable green beater—almost no deck runs horsemanship creatures, so she connects every turn. Suit her up with auras, equipment, and trample/double-strike effects, ramp hard, and kill players with commander damage. Turn to turn you ramp, drop a threat, pile on buffs, and swing.

Strengths

  • Effectively unblockable thanks to horsemanship, making commander damage reliable
  • Mono-green gives access to the format's best ramp and the biggest creatures/pumps
  • Cheap to recast at 5 mana, resilient to chump blockers
  • Voltron lines kill fast and need few cards to come together

Weaknesses

  • No evasion-proofing against removal—single-target spot removal resets your whole investment
  • Card disadvantage from over-committing auras (the 'one with Pacifism' problem)
  • Mono-green struggles with interaction: no counterspells, little instant-speed removal, weak vs flyers/control
  • Vanilla body provides zero value beyond combat; lackluster in the early game

Key Cards

  • Shizo, Death's Storehouse — Mono-color land that grants fear, stacking another near-unblockable evasion on top of horsemanship.
  • Rancor — Recurring, removal-proof aura giving +2/+0 and trample that keeps coming back from the graveyard.
  • Shadowspear — Cheap equipment granting trample and lifelink while stripping hexproof/indestructible off blockers and defenders.
  • Berserk — Doubles her power and adds trample for an explosive, often lethal one-shot commander-damage swing.
  • Heroic Intervention — Protects your buffed-up queen from board wipes and targeted removal at instant speed.
  • Three Visits — Cheap ramp/fixing that accelerates you to her and to a haymaker of pumps.

Upgrade Path

Lean into protection (Heroic Intervention, Snakeskin Veil, Veil of Summer) so your investment survives removal, and add power-doublers and trample enablers (Xenagos-style pumps, Loxodon Warhammer, Berserk). Improve the ramp suite with mana dorks and rocks to recast her cheaply, and add a Craterhoof/Overwhelming Stampede backup plan so you aren't all-in on one creature.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸21 commander damage from a single buffed, unblockable swing
  • ▸Berserk or double-strike combined with power pumps for a one-shot kill
  • ▸Going wide and finishing with Overrun/Craterhoof Behemoth-style overruns

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Her built-in horsemanship evasion makes loading her with auras and equipment a reliable one-shot kill plan.
  • Stompy/Big Mana — Mono-green ramp lets you out-size the table and use overrun-style effects backed by an unblockable general.
  • Hexproof/Protection Voltron — Shrouding her with protective auras turns the unblockable beater into a hard-to-answer clock.
