The Commander

Trample, haste

Whenever Leatherhead attacks, put two +1/+1 counters on each creature you control.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast Leatherhead and immediately swing thanks to haste, pumping your whole board with two +1/+1 counters on every attack to overwhelm tables with trampling beaters. You ramp into the 7-mana body early, develop a wide creature board beforehand, then convert counters into lethal damage or counter-synergy payoffs. Each combat snowballs your team, so protecting Leatherhead and getting in repeated attacks is the core loop.

Strengths

  • Haste means immediate impact the turn it lands, even after a recast
  • Pumps your entire board, not just one creature, rewarding go-wide builds
  • Trample on the commander pushes damage through chumps
  • Mono-green gives easy ramp to hit 7 mana fast and reliably
  • Fantastic engine for +1/+1 counter synergy payoffs

Weaknesses

  • 7 mana is steep and the effect only triggers on attack, so removal before combat wastes it
  • Single removal spell on Leatherhead shuts off the engine entirely
  • Mono-green lacks interaction, card draw fixing, and protection compared to other colors
  • Board wipes are devastating to a go-wide counter strategy
  • No evasion granted to the rest of your team beyond raw size

Key Cards

  • Hardened Scales — Turns each attack's two counters into three per creature, accelerating the snowball dramatically.
  • Branching Evolution — Doubles every counter Leatherhead distributes for explosive board-wide growth.
  • Doubling Season — Doubles all counters placed, making a single attack lethal across your board.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Stacks additional counters every time your creatures enter, layering with Leatherhead's combat trigger.
  • Craterhoof Behemoth — Combines a wide, counter-pumped board into a single overwhelming alpha strike.
  • Heroic Intervention — Cheap protection that shields your board and commander from removal and wipes.

Upgrade Path

Add counter doublers (Hardened Scales, Branching Evolution, Doubling Season) and proliferate effects to multiply Leatherhead's output, plus protection like Heroic Intervention and Tyvar's Stand to keep the engine online. Lean into mana acceleration (Sol Ring, Nature's Lore, Cultivate) so you deploy Leatherhead by turn 4-5, and include evasion or trample-granters and a Craterhoof-style finisher to close before opponents stabilize. Round out with recursion (Heroic Intervention, Eternal Witness, regrowth effects) to recast through removal.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Alpha strike with a counter-pumped, trampling board for lethal combat damage
  • ▸Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede finishing a wide board
  • ▸Repeated attacks growing creatures until single threats become unblockable beaters
  • ▸Counter-payoff finishers like Ezuri or Tribute to the Wild combos turning size into kills

Archetypes

  • +1/+1 Counters — Leatherhead is a repeatable counter engine that scales with doublers and counter payoffs.
  • Go-Wide Tokens — Buffing every creature you control rewards flooding the board with token generators.
  • Stompy Aggro — Trample, haste, and team pumps make this a classic mono-green beatdown commander.
