The Commander

Whenever an opponent draws a card except the first one they draw in each of their draw steps, put a +1/+1 counter on Leela.

Doctor's companion (You can have two commanders if the other is the Doctor.)

Guide

Gameplan

Leela is a Doctor's companion, so she's almost always paired with a Doctor to expand your color identity—most powerfully a blue one. She grows a +1/+1 counter every time an opponent draws beyond their first draw-step card, so you want symmetric/forced card draw effects to balloon her, then close with commander damage or trample. As a standalone green build she leans on counters synergy and forced-draw enablers to swing big.

Strengths

  • Turns opponent card advantage into your own creature growth, punishing draw-heavy and wheel-based metas
  • Doctor's companion grants flexible two-commander deckbuilding and access to a second color, dramatically widening your card pool
  • Cheap four-mana body that scales for free without you spending resources
  • Synergizes with the popular forced-draw and group-draw shells already common in Doctor Who decks

Weaknesses

  • Her ability does nothing on its own—she needs forced/extra draw enablers to grow, and mono-green can't provide them
  • Easily removed; relies on a fragile creature accumulating counters with no built-in evasion or protection
  • Pure mono-green builds her are weak; she really wants a blue Doctor partner to function
  • Counter resets to nothing on each death, costing tempo and commander tax

Key Cards

  • Master, Multiplied — As a blue Doctor partner, gives Leela legal access to forced-draw and wheel effects that trigger her constantly.
  • Howling Mine — Symmetric extra draw that hands opponents a card each turn, stacking counters on Leela passively.
  • Font of Mythos — Doubles down on group-draw, adding multiple counters per opponent turn cycle.
  • Forced Fruition — Forces an opponent to draw a card per spell they cast, exploding Leela's counter count.
  • Rishadan Cutpurse — Illustrative of the tempo/evasion package you want to push counters through for commander-damage kills.
  • Rogue's Passage — Guarantees unblockable damage to convert Leela's accumulated counters into a lethal swing.

Upgrade Path

Pair her with a strong blue Doctor like Master, Multiplied to unlock wheels, group-draw, and forced-draw spells that grow her every turn. Add evasion and protection (Rogue's Passage, Whispersilk Cloak, Heroic Intervention) so her counters actually convert to wins, plus proliferate effects like Inexorable Tide to accelerate her. Top-end ramp and counter-doublers (Doubling Season) make her lethal far faster.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage from an oversized Leela pushed through with evasion
  • ▸Trample and Overrun-style finishers turning a huge Leela into lethal
  • ▸Proliferate-fueled counter explosions creating an unblockable threat

Archetypes

  • Forced Draw / Group Draw — She converts every extra opponent draw into permanent stats, rewarding mass card-draw enablers.
  • +1/+1 Counters — She's a free counter battery that pairs with proliferate and counter-doubling payoffs.
  • Voltron — Her self-scaling body plus evasion enablers makes commander-damage kills natural.
  • Wheel/Stax-adjacent Control — With a blue Doctor she can punish opponents for drawing while you tax and outgrow the table.
