The Commander

Reach

Whenever you cast a spell that targets Legolas, put a +1/+1 counter on Legolas.

Whenever you cast a spell that targets a creature you don't control, Legolas deals damage equal to its power to up to one target creature.

Guide

Gameplan

Pump Legolas with cheap auras and combat tricks to grow him into a huge body, then use his second ability to snipe opposing creatures every time you cast a spell targeting one of their creatures. He plays as a Voltron threat backed by free removal, closing games with commander damage while controlling the board.

Strengths

  • Self-protecting and self-growing—every buff spell adds a permanent counter
  • Built-in repeatable removal that scales with his power
  • Cheap to cast and recast at 3 mana in mono-green
  • Reach plus high power dodges and punishes fliers and attackers

Weaknesses

  • Mono-green lacks counterspells and instant-speed interaction outside of fight/protection
  • Vulnerable to board wipes and edict effects despite hexproof tricks
  • Removal ability requires targeting opponents' creatures, so it's blank against creatureless decks
  • Heavy reliance on the commander makes you fragile to repeated removal

Key Cards

  • Snakeskin Veil — Cheap protection that also drops a +1/+1 counter, dodging removal while growing him.
  • Inspiring Call — Draws cards and grants indestructible based on his counters while protecting your board.
  • Rancor — Recurring aura that buffs power and trample and keeps coming back from the graveyard to re-trigger growth.
  • Berserk — Doubles his power for a turn—both for a lethal swing and for a massive removal ping at an opponent's creature.
  • Shielded by Faith — Repeatable hexproof/indestructible plus a counter each cast if you bounce and replay targeting effects.
  • Blackblade Reforged — Scales with your lands to push commander damage into one-shot range quickly.

Upgrade Path

Add efficient protection (Heroic Intervention, Tamiyo's Safekeeping) and reusable buff engines to chain triggers, plus trample and double-strike enablers to convert power into lethal damage. Lean into card draw like Garruk's Uprising and Beast Whisperer to refuel, and consider mana doublers (Nyxbloom Ancient) to recast him and cast multiple buff spells per turn.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage from a buffed, trampling Legolas
  • ▸Grinding the board to death with repeated targeted removal pings
  • ▸Going wide alongside a giant Legolas with overrun-style finishers

Archetypes

  • Voltron — His self-growing counters and protection auras make him a resilient single-target threat for commander damage.
  • Auras/Enchantress — Aura and buff spells both grow him and enable his removal trigger, rewarding a spell-heavy enchantment build.
  • Stompy/Toolbox Removal — His damage ability acts as free creature removal whenever you target opposing creatures with pump or fight spells.
