BuildCard details

The Commander

Affinity for creatures (This spell costs {1} less to cast for each creature you control.)

Double strike (This creature deals both first-strike and regular combat damage.)

Guide

Gameplan

Flood the board with cheap creatures to slash Leonardo's cost down to a few mana, then suit him up and swing with double strike for huge, often lethal, commander-damage hits. Between turns you build a wide white board that can also win through anthems and team alpha strikes. He's a fast-deploying threat that turns a creature swarm directly into pressure.

Strengths

  • Affinity for creatures makes an 8-mana commander castable for 1-3 mana once your board is established, enabling repeated recasts after removal
  • Double strike doubles all combat buffs, equipment, and anthems—great for cheap commander-damage kills
  • Lives in mono-white, the best color for token swarms, cheap creatures, and anthem effects to feed both affinity and offense
  • Resilient threat: you can rebuild a creature board quickly to re-cheapen and recast him

Weaknesses

  • No built-in evasion, trample, or protection—chump blockers and a single removal spell stop a swing cold
  • Board wipes are devastating, simultaneously erasing your offense and spiking his cast cost back toward 8
  • Mono-white lacks strong card advantage and ramp, so flooding out or running dry mid-game is common
  • Heavily reliant on creatures sticking around to be cheap and to deal damage—creature-light openings are awkward

Key Cards

  • Swords to Plowshares — Premier cheap removal to clear blockers or kill problem creatures before your alpha strike.
  • Skullclamp — Solves mono-white's card draw by sacrificing small tokens, refilling your hand to keep the board wide.
  • Shadowspear — Grants trample and lifelink, letting double-strike Leonardo punch through chumps for the kill.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles your token output, deepening affinity and the go-wide plan simultaneously.
  • Sword of Fire and Ice — Protection, evasion, card draw, and a damage boost all doubled by double strike.
  • Bennie Bracks, Zoologist — Repeatable card advantage that rewards a wide white board, exactly what this deck builds.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and ramp (Sol Ring, Smothering Tithe, Mana Crypt) plus protection like Swiftfoot Boots and Heroic Intervention to make Leonardo land and connect reliably. Lean into the best token producers and anthems (Anointed Procession, Cathars' Crusade) and high-impact equipment (the Swords cycle, Embercleave-style payoffs) so a single double-strike swing is lethal. Round out with white's premium card-advantage engines—Skullclamp, Welcoming Vampire, Mentor of the Meek—to avoid running out of gas.

  • ▸Wide alpha strike backed by anthems like Intangible Virtue or Cathars' Crusade
  • ▸Evasive equipment (Sword of Fire and Ice, Shadowspear trample) pushing Leonardo through for the kill

Archetypes

  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Cheap and token creatures both fuel affinity and provide an army to win or feed Leonardo.
  • Voltron — Double strike makes equipment and auras hit twice for fast commander-damage kills.
  • Aggro — A discounted recurring threat plus a creature swarm lets you race the table down early.
  • Equipment / Aristocrats lite — Equipment hubs and sacrifice/draw engines like Skullclamp keep the board churning and lethal.
