The Commander

Flying

{1}{W}, Sacrifice Lieutenant Kirtar: Exile target attacking creature.

Guide

Gameplan

Lieutenant Kirtar is a mono-white midrange commander that leans on its flying body and its repeatable removal-on-a-stick ability to control the board while you grind out value. You play efficient creatures and equipment, swing in the air with Kirtar, and hold the sacrifice ability as insurance to exile a threatening attacker. Most builds pivot to a broader white go-wide or Voltron plan since the commander itself is more of a defensive utility piece than an engine.

Strengths

  • Built-in unconditional exile removal that dodges indestructible and regeneration
  • Cheap flying evasive body at three mana
  • Mono-white means consistent mana and access to white's deep removal/recursion suite
  • Sacrifice ability is reusable if you can recur or blink Kirtar

Weaknesses

  • The exile ability only hits attacking creatures, so it's reactive and useless against non-combat threats
  • Sacrificing Kirtar means losing your commander unless you can get it back cheaply
  • Mono-white lacks card draw and ramp compared to other colors
  • Low intrinsic power level; the commander does little to advance a proactive win

Key Cards

  • Swords to Plowshares — Premium white removal that complements Kirtar's combat-only exile by handling threats anytime.
  • Skullclamp — Mono-white's best card-draw engine, critical to offset the color's draw weakness.
  • Smothering Tithe — Provides the ramp and resource advantage mono-white desperately needs.
  • Sun Titan — Recurs Kirtar and cheap utility pieces, turning the sacrifice ability into a repeatable loop.
  • Emeria, the Sky Ruin — Reanimates Kirtar and other creatures each upkeep in a Plains-heavy mono-white shell.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and ramp (Smothering Tithe, Sol Ring, Mana Crypt) to overcome white's slow starts, and prioritize card advantage engines like Skullclamp, Welcoming Vampire, and Esper Sentinel. Lean into a recursion package (Sun Titan, Emeria, the Sky Ruin) so sacrificing Kirtar costs you nothing, and consider building toward a tighter win condition like a token combo (Divine Visitation plus token doublers) rather than relying on grindy combat.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Going wide with tokens backed by anthems like Intangible Virtue or Cathars' Crusade
  • ▸Voltron beatdown by suiting up Kirtar or another evasive creature with equipment
  • ▸Grinding opponents out with repeatable removal and value engines until you win the long game

Archetypes

  • Midrange Control — Kirtar's exile ability plus white's removal suite lets you police the board while grinding value.
  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Mono-white excels at flooding the board with anthems and token makers to outnumber opponents.
  • Voltron — A cheap flier makes a fine equipment carrier, and the sac ability can clear blockers' alpha strikes.
  • Blink — Flickering or recurring Kirtar lets you reuse its sacrifice exile repeatedly as removal.
