BuildCard details

The Commander

Lluwen enters prepared. (While it's prepared, you may cast a copy of its spell. Doing so unprepares it.)

Exile a creature card from your graveyard: Lluwen becomes prepared. Activate only as a sorcery.

Create a 1/1 black and green Pest creature token with "Whenever this token attacks, you gain 1 life."

Guide

Gameplan

Lluwen is a token engine: cast the Pest Friend copy whenever she's prepared to make a lifegain-on-attack Pest, then re-prepare her each turn by exiling creature cards from your graveyard. You flood the board with disposable bodies, fuel an aristocrats or go-wide engine off them, and grind value while gaining incremental life. Fill the yard early, then turn it into a steady stream of fodder that converts into damage, drain, or card advantage.

Strengths

  • Repeatable token generation that only costs a graveyard creature and a sorcery-speed activation, giving endless sacrifice fodder.
  • Bodies are colorless to the board state but carry built-in lifegain, stabilizing you in grindy games.
  • Cheap commander (MV4) that rebuilds your battlefield after wraths once your graveyard is stocked.
  • Slots perfectly into BG's deep aristocrats, sacrifice, and token-doubling toolboxes.

Weaknesses

  • Token production is locked to sorcery speed and one per turn cycle without doublers, so it's slow on its own.
  • Heavily dependent on a stocked graveyard—graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) chokes the engine.
  • Each Pest is just a 1/1, demanding payoffs to convert quantity into a real threat.
  • No evasion or protection built in; relies on the rest of the deck to actually close games.

Key Cards

  • Pitiless Plunderer — Turns every sacrificed Pest into Treasure, generating explosive mana to re-prepare and recast repeatedly.
  • Blood Artist — Converts your stream of expendable Pests into incremental drain that wins multiplayer games.
  • Parallel Lives — Doubles each Pest Friend cast, instantly making the token engine twice as efficient.
  • Ashnod's Altar — Free sacrifice outlet that ramps you and loops bodies, the backbone of an aristocrats build.
  • Grave Pact — Punishes opponents every time you sac a Pest, turning your fodder into mass removal.
  • Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest — Grows your whole board off sacrifices, making the Pest swarm a genuine kill threat.

Upgrade Path

Add token doublers (Parallel Lives, Anointed Procession, Mondrak) and free sacrifice outlets (Ashnod's Altar, Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder) to accelerate the loop. Layer in self-mill (Stitcher's Supplier, Grisly Salvage) so the graveyard never runs dry, and finish with aristocrats payoffs (Bastion of Remembrance, Bloodthrone Vampire) plus Skullclamp for card draw off dying Pests. For higher power, lean into a Pitiless Plunderer + sacrifice + recursion mana loop to chain multiple Pest casts per turn.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, and Bastion of Remembrance as you loop Pests.
  • ▸Go-wide alpha strike backed by Craterhoof Behemoth, Overrun, or anthem effects.
  • ▸Grinding opponents out with Grave Pact / Dictate of Erebos edicts while you rebuild.
  • ▸Lifegain payoffs like Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose turning attack triggers into damage.

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Endless Pest tokens are perfect sacrifice fodder for Blood Artist, Grave Pact, and altars.
  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Token doublers and anthems scale the Pest stream into a lethal board.
  • Lifegain — Attacking Pests trigger lifegain that fuels payoffs like Vito or Aetherflux Reservoir.
  • Reanimator / Graveyard Value — Self-mill stocks the yard, and Lluwen lets you convert spent creature cards into board presence.
