Gameplan
Lo and Li is a mono-black tutor engine: on entry it digs up your best Lesson or Noble card, and it blankets your Noble creatures and Lesson spells with lifelink so you grind value while staying out of burn range. You ramp into the commander, fetch a key payoff, then leverage black's recursion to keep redeploying and re-tutoring while attrition and lifegain carry you to a late-game finish.
Strengths
- Built-in tutoring smooths every game and finds your win pieces or answers.
- Free lifelink on a whole subtheme makes racing and aggro matchups very favorable.
- Mono-black gives access to the best removal, recursion, and tutors in the format.
- Blink and recursion turn the ETB tutor into a repeatable card-advantage machine.
Weaknesses
- Heavily reliant on having enough Lesson/Noble cards to make the ETB worthwhile.
- No card advantage if Lo and Li is removed before connecting and you lack recursion.
- Mono-color means weak interaction with the stack and no access to counterspells or board wipes beyond black's limited tools.
- Lifelink does little against combo or non-damage win conditions.

Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Sol Ring, talismans aren't black—use mana rocks like Charcoal Diamond and rituals) and more blink/reanimation (Conjurer's Closet, Phyrexian Reclamation, Reanimate) to fire the ETB repeatedly. Lean into a tight package of black tutors (Demonic, Vampiric, Imperial Seal) so the engine reliably assembles a payoff, and include an aristocrats kill (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat) to convert the lifegain into actual damage rather than just durdling.
