BuildCard details

The Commander

Ward {1}

At the beginning of your upkeep, exile the top X cards of your library, where X is the number of card types among other nonland permanents you control. You may play those cards this turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Loot is a Temur card-advantage engine: each upkeep you impulse-exile X cards equal to the number of distinct card types among your other nonland permanents, then play them that turn. You build a wide, type-diverse board (artifact + creature + enchantment + planeswalker + battle) to crank X up to 5+, then bury opponents under sheer volume of free spells and grind to a win with raw resources.

Strengths

  • Generates massive card advantage every turn with no card investment once set up
  • Ward {1} makes Loot resilient to cheap single-target removal
  • Temur colors give access to ramp, big payoffs, and flexible interaction
  • Rewards permanent-type diversity, naturally building a sticky, redundant board
  • Impulse draw dodges discard and hand-size limits

Weaknesses

  • Highly dependent on the commander; if Loot dies repeatedly the engine stalls
  • X is small (often 1-3) until you assemble several distinct permanent types
  • Impulse-drawn cards are lost if you can't play them that turn—mana hungry
  • Vulnerable to board wipes that erase your type-diverse battlefield
  • No built-in protection beyond Ward {1}; sweepers and exile hose it
  • Can flood on lands or whiff if you exile spells you can't afford

Key Cards

  • Esika's Chariot — A single artifact that makes Cat tokens, adding both artifact and creature types cheaply while padding the board.
  • The Great Henge — Provides ramp, card draw, and lifegain while counting as an artifact type to grow X.
  • Wedding Ring — Helps level the card advantage race and counts toward your artifact type while drawing extra cards.
  • Birgi, God of Storytelling — Generates red mana off your impulse-drawn spells, letting you actually cast everything you exile.
  • Jeska's Will — Explosive ritual that lets you dump a turn's worth of impulse-exiled cards in one go.
  • Goldspan Dragon — Doubles treasure value to fuel casting your exiled cards and adds a powerful creature body.
  • Mana Reflection — Doubles your mana to play out everything Loot exiles each upkeep.
  • Heroic Intervention — Protects your type-diverse board and Loot from sweepers and targeted removal.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the curve and add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Vault, signets) plus treasure/ritual makers like Dockside Extortionist and Birgi so you can actually cast everything Loot exiles. Prioritize permanents that add multiple or unusual card types (artifact creatures, enchantment creatures, planeswalkers, even a battle) to push X higher early. Finally, add protection (Heroic Intervention, Lightning Greaves) and recursion to keep your board and commander online through wipes.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Grind opponents out with overwhelming card and board advantage, then attack with fatties
  • ▸Cast an impulse-drawn finisher like Craterhoof Behemoth or an Overrun effect for lethal
  • ▸Resolve a game-ending bomb or planeswalker ultimate enabled by free spells
  • ▸Combo or burst kill assembled off a high-volume Loot turn

Archetypes

  • Value Midrange/Goodstuff — Loot's impulse engine rewards a pile of efficient, type-varied permanents that snowball card advantage.
  • Superfriends — Adding planeswalkers boosts X while providing repeatable advantage and protection.
  • Spellslinger Hybrid — Treasure and ritual support let you chain the impulse-drawn instants and sorceries into big turns.
  • Big-Mana Ramp — Temur ramp converts Loot's free cards into expensive bombs and overwhelming board states.
