BuildCard details

The Commander

When Malcator enters, create a 3/3 colorless Phyrexian Golem artifact creature token.

At the beginning of your end step, if three or more artifacts entered the battlefield under your control this turn, create a 3/3 colorless Phyrexian Golem artifact creature token.

Guide

Gameplan

Malcator rewards flooding the board with artifacts—token makers, cheap artifacts, and copy effects—to trigger his end-step Golem-making ability every turn. You build a wide artifact-creature board, protect it, and either go tall with anthems or wide with token payoffs. Many builds lean into artifact ramp and combo finishers to close fast.

Strengths

  • Free 3/3 on cast and a recurring 3/3 engine that's hard to interact with
  • UW gives premium board protection, counterspells, and wraths to stabilize
  • Artifact synergies make ramp, card draw, and payoffs overlap efficiently
  • Cheap commander (3 MV) that's easy to recast and immediately impactful

Weaknesses

  • The end-step trigger requires three artifacts entering each turn, which can stall without enablers
  • Token-heavy board is vulnerable to wraths and artifact removal (Vandalblast, Bane of Progress)
  • Colorless Golems lack evasion, so wide boards can be chump-blocked
  • No inherent card advantage from the commander itself beyond bodies

Key Cards

  • Myr Battlesphere — Enters with four Myr tokens, instantly satisfying the three-artifact threshold.
  • Sai, Master Thopterist — Pumps out Thopters whenever you cast artifacts, easily reaching three entries per turn.
  • Thopter Spy Network — Free artifact token each turn plus card advantage to fuel the engine.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles every Golem and artifact token, snowballing the board and triggers.
  • March of the Machines — Turns all your artifacts into creatures for a potential overwhelming alpha strike.
  • Cyberdrive Awakener — Animates and gives haste to your artifacts for a surprise lethal swing.

Upgrade Path

Add token doublers (Anointed Procession, Mondrak), free artifact engines (Urza's Saga, Thopter Assembly with Time Sieve for combo), and efficient artifact ramp (Sol Ring, Mana Vault, signets) to consistently hit three artifacts per turn. Tighten the manabase with fast mana and fetch-supported fixing, then add protection like Teferi's Protection and Heroic Intervention to survive wraths. For a higher ceiling, include a compact combo such as Time Sieve plus Thopter Assembly or a Saheeli/artifact engine to end games before grind matters.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Overwhelming the table with a wide Golem/token board boosted by anthems
  • ▸Animating all artifacts with March of the Machines or Cyberdrive Awakener for alpha strikes
  • ▸Artifact-based combos (e.g., infinite tokens with sacrifice/aristocrat payoffs)
  • ▸Going tall with equipment or counters on a Golem for commander-style beats

Archetypes

  • Tokens — Malcator generates a steady stream of Golems that token doublers and anthems amplify.
  • Artifacts (Affinity/Stax-lite) — The deck naturally runs heavy artifact counts that enable cost reducers and lockpieces.
  • Combo — Artifact-centric infinite token or mana loops in UW close games quickly.
  • Control — UW's counters and wraths let you grind while the commander rebuilds the board.

Combos

  • Malcator, Purity Overseer + Nim Deathmantle + Ashnod's Altar

→ Infinite death triggers, Infinite ETB, Infinite LTB
