The Commander

Flying

Whenever one or more Pirates you control deal damage to your opponents, you create a Treasure token for each opponent dealt damage. (It's an artifact with "{T}, Sacrifice this token: Add one mana of any color.")

Partner (You can have two commanders if both have partner.)

Guide

Gameplan

Deploy cheap evasive Pirates, connect with combat damage to generate Treasures, then snowball that ramp into card advantage, big spells, or a combo finish. Malcolm flies and triggers on his own, so even a single point of unblocked damage per opponent banks Treasures every turn. With Partner you'll usually pair him to add a second color, removal, or a combo engine.

Strengths

  • Repeatable, scalable Treasure ramp that fuels expensive spells and fixes mana when paired with another color via Partner
  • Evasive flying body that reliably triggers itself and survives most board wipes targeting the ground
  • Enables fast, explosive turns and supports several dedicated infinite combos
  • Pirates synergy gives access to value tribal pieces and aggressive evasive threats

Weaknesses

  • Fragile in mono-blue — limited removal and few ways to protect Malcolm or recover after a wipe
  • Treasure engine collapses if Malcolm is removed and you lack other Pirate damage
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate and Treasure/artifact hate against the combo builds
  • Combat-damage dependency means fog effects, flying blockers, or pillowfort defenses slow you down

Key Cards

  • Breeches, Brazen Plunderer — Top Partner pairing — his impulsive-draw Treasures combo with Malcolm and another Pirate for infinite mana and storm-style payoffs.
  • Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar — Partner that adds red and turns Malcolm's combat damage into reach, doubling Treasure output across multiple opponents.
  • Thassa's Oracle — Premier mono-blue win condition once your Treasure mana lets you dig and empty your library.
  • Cloud of Faeries — With Malcolm and untap engines like Deadeye Navigator, it loops for infinite Treasure and triggers.
  • Smuggler's Copter — Cheap evasive crewed threat that loots and reliably connects to bank Treasures.
  • Deadeye Navigator — Blinks Cloud of Faeries or Peregrine Drake for infinite mana and combo lines.

Upgrade Path

Choose a Partner to define the deck — Breeches for the dedicated infinite-mana combo, Kediss for aggressive reach, or Tymna/Tana-style off-color partners aren't legal in mono-U so stay within partners that add value. Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt), efficient tutors (Mystical Tutor, Spellseeker), and protection (Pact of Negation, Swan Song) to make the combo turns more consistent and resilient. Tighten the curve with cheap evasive Pirates and untap engines so Treasures come online by turn three.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Thassa's Oracle or Laboratory Maniac after drawing your library with combo mana
  • ▸Infinite Treasure into a damage outlet like Breeches' impulsive draws or an X-spell
  • ▸Going wide with evasive Pirates and beating down while snowballing Treasures
  • ▸Casting an oversized finisher (e.g., a huge Blue Sun's Zenith) off explosive Treasure ramp

Archetypes

  • Combo — Malcolm's Treasure generation pairs with untappers and impulsive-draw Pirates like Breeches to make infinite mana and storm out wins.
  • Pirate Tribal / Aggro — A wide, evasive Pirate board converts every attack into a pile of Treasures and overwhelming tempo.
  • Spellslinger / Storm — Treasure ramp fuels chains of cantrips and big payoff spells, especially when paired with a red Partner.
  • Control — Mono-blue counters and bounce protect Malcolm while Treasures bankroll late-game finishers.
