BuildCard details

The Commander

{1}{R}: Switch each creature's power and toughness until end of turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Mannichi is a toughness-matters aggro/combat deck: load the board with high-toughness, low-power creatures (often defenders or walls), then activate Mannichi to swap power and toughness and swing for huge unexpected damage. Turn to turn you ramp into beefy bodies, hold up the {1}{R} activation as a combat trick, and flip the switch at the perfect attack or block to blow opponents out.

Strengths

  • Cheap, repeatable power/toughness swap that doubles as a combat trick and removal-dodge
  • Turns 'do-nothing' high-toughness walls and defenders into game-ending beaters
  • Mono-red gives consistent, focused mana and great ritual/burn support
  • Punishes opponents who block based on printed power, enabling huge blowouts

Weaknesses

  • The effect is symmetrical, so a poorly built board can backfire and kill your own creatures
  • Mono-red lacks card draw and struggles to recover from a board wipe
  • Many key payoffs (defenders, high-toughness creatures) are weak without the switch active
  • Vulnerable to instant-speed removal aimed at the commander, shutting off the plan

Key Cards

  • Wall of Earth — A 0/6 defender becomes a 6/0 attacker after the switch, a classic budget payoff.
  • Doran, the Siege Tower — Color identity won't allow it, but high-toughness staples mirror its theme—use red equivalents instead.
  • Brash Taunter — High-toughness body that survives the swap risk and pings opponents when damaged.
  • Assault Formation — Lets your toughness-heavy creatures deal combat damage even without Mannichi as a backup engine.
  • Hammerheim — Niche mono-red utility, but prioritize ramp and burn to keep activations flowing.
  • Trove of Temptation — Forces attacks and ramps treasures, pressuring opponents while you set up swings.

Upgrade Path

Add efficient ramp (Treasure makers, mana rocks) so you can hold up the {1}{R} activation every turn while developing. Lean into damage doublers and trample enablers (Assault Formation, overrun-style effects) to make swapped attackers unblockable threats. Round out with mono-red card advantage like Wheel effects and impulse draw to fight through wipes and keep the gas flowing.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Swing wide with high-toughness creatures, then activate Mannichi to deal lethal commander-style damage
  • ▸Use the switch as a combat trick to win otherwise-lopsided fights and grind in
  • ▸Back up the board with red burn and damage-doublers for reach

Archetypes

  • Toughness-Matters Aggro — Mannichi converts massive toughness into massive power for surprise lethal attacks.
  • Combat Tricks/Voltron — The instant-speed swap acts as a repeatable trick to win combat and connect for damage.
  • Burn/Spellslinger Hybrid — Mono-red reach with direct damage closes games the toughness swing can't.
