BuildCard details

The Commander

Mendicant Core's power is equal to the number of artifacts you control.

Start your engines! (If you have no speed, it starts at 1. It increases once on each of your turns when an opponent loses life. Max speed is 4.)

Max speed — Whenever you cast an artifact spell, you may pay {1}. If you do, copy it. (The copy becomes a token.)

Guide

Gameplan

Flood the board with cheap artifacts to make Mendicant Core a fast, scaling beater while building toward max speed. Once you hit speed 4, every artifact you cast can be copied for {1}, snowballing value and your token count. Win by going wide with artifacts, swinging with a huge Core, or assembling an artifact-based combo.

Strengths

  • Two-mana commander that comes online immediately and scales with your whole artifact base
  • Copying artifact spells at max speed generates massive value and accelerates the engine
  • UW gives access to the best artifact tutors, protection, and counterspells
  • Synergizes with the entire artifact-matters package without needing dedicated build-arounds

Weaknesses

  • Power is board-dependent: artifact wipes like Vandalblast or Bane of Progress gut the deck
  • Reaching and maintaining max speed requires consistently dealing combat or noncombat damage
  • Core has no evasion or built-in protection, so it's easy to chump or remove
  • Slower to close games than dedicated combo decks if the engine is disrupted

Key Cards

  • Sai, Master Thopterist — Turns each artifact cast into a flyer and lets you sacrifice artifacts for cards, deepening the engine.
  • Urza, Lord High Artificer — Generates blue mana from your artifacts to fuel copying and casting, plus an artifact-fueled tutor.
  • Foundry Inspector — Cost reducers make cheap artifacts effectively free, helping you spam spells and copies.
  • Cyberdrive Awakener — Animates all your artifacts to attack alongside a giant Core for an explosive go-wide finish.
  • Whir of Invention — Instant-speed artifact tutor that can be copied at max speed to fetch two pieces.
  • Mishra's Bauble — Free artifacts pump Core, draw cards, and trigger copy effects at no real cost.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and cost reducers (Mana Vault, Mox Opal, Foundry Inspector, Etherium Sculptor) to flood faster and hit max speed early. Lean into tutors like Whir of Invention, Tezzeret the Seeker, and Inventors' Fair, then add a compact combo finish such as Urza plus Winter Orb/Thopter Foundry-Sword of the Meek to give the deck a deterministic kill. Round out with protection (Teferi's Protection, Heroic Intervention) to survive the artifact sweepers that prey on this strategy.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Swinging with a massive Mendicant Core, often with evasion or trample
  • ▸Going wide with thopter/artifact tokens plus an anthem or Cyberdrive Awakener alpha strike
  • ▸Assembling an artifact combo (e.g. Urza-fueled infinite mana into a payoff)
  • ▸Copying high-impact artifact spells repeatedly to bury opponents in value

Archetypes

  • Artifacts (Affinity/Go-Wide) — Core's power and the speed payoff both reward cramming as many artifacts onto the board as possible.
  • Combo — UW artifact synergies enable loops with copy effects, cost reducers, and infinite mana engines like Urza.
  • Voltron — Core grows with each artifact, so equipment and protection can turn it into a one-shot commander threat.
  • Spellslinger (Artifact) — Max speed copies artifact spells, rewarding a high density of impactful artifact cast triggers.
