The Commander

Disappear — At the beginning of your end step, if a permanent left the battlefield under your control this turn, put a +1/+1 counter on Michelangelo.

Guide

Gameplan

Michelangelo is a mono-green growth engine: each turn you make sure a permanent leaves the battlefield under your control—a sac, a fetchland, a token dying, a creature blinking—and he banks a +1/+1 counter at end step. Snowball those counters with green's counter-doublers and trample/evasion enablers, then swing for lethal commander damage or go wide off the leftover sacrifice value.

Strengths

  • Cheap 3-mana commander that grows for nearly free since almost any permanent leaving works
  • Mono-green has the best ramp and counter-synergy support, making big-Michelangelo easy to assemble
  • Trigger is flexible: fetchlands, Evolving Wilds, sac outlets, token death, and blink all satisfy it
  • Resilient growth that doesn't rely on combat triggers, so he scales even on defense

Weaknesses

  • The trigger gives only one counter per turn regardless of how many permanents left—growth is linear, not explosive
  • No built-in evasion or protection; a single removal spell resets all your invested counters
  • Mono-green struggles with interaction, card draw on demand, and answering flyers/control decks
  • Easily chump-blocked or stalled without trample/evasion enablers
  • Needs a reliable, free-to-activate way to make a permanent leave each turn or the engine stalls

Key Cards

  • Hardened Scales — Turns each Disappear trigger into two counters and boosts every other counter you place.
  • Branching Evolution — Doubles the +1/+1 counters Michelangelo accumulates, accelerating the clock dramatically.
  • Doubling Season — Doubles counters and tokens, supercharging both the commander and your sacrifice fodder.
  • Ashnod's Altar — A free sac outlet that guarantees a permanent leaves each turn while generating ramp mana.
  • Evolutionary Leap — Repeatable free sacrifice that triggers Disappear and digs for threats while replacing fodder.
  • Rancor — Cheap, recurring trample that converts Michelangelo's counters into lethal commander damage.
  • Heroic Intervention — Protects your heavily-invested commander from board wipes and targeted removal.
  • Skullclamp — Sacrifices and replaces tokens for cards, fueling both the trigger and your hand.

Upgrade Path

Prioritize counter-doublers (Hardened Scales, Branching Evolution, Doubling Season) and proliferate sources to break the one-per-turn ceiling, plus free sac outlets so the trigger is never missed. Add evasion and protection—Rancor, Shadowspear, Heroic Intervention, Snakeskin Veil—to make commander damage reliable and resilient. Tighten the manabase with fetch-style lands and fast mana like Sol Ring and green rituals to deploy Michelangelo and a doubler on the same turn.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸One-shot or two-shot commander damage with a trampling, evasive Michelangelo
  • ▸Proliferate and counter-doublers turning him into an oversized beater quickly
  • ▸Going wide with token armies plus an Overrun-style finisher
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via repeated sacrifice loops as a backup plan

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Counters stack on Michelangelo each turn, and green's trample/protection suite turns him into a one-shot commander-damage threat.
  • +1/+1 Counters — His passive counter generation slots perfectly into proliferate and counter-doubler shells.
  • Aristocrats/Sacrifice — Sac outlets reliably satisfy Disappear while generating their own value and board presence.
  • Tokens — Token makers provide endless cheap fodder to sacrifice or let die, feeding both the trigger and go-wide finishes.
