The Commander

Whenever you put a counter on a creature you control, draw a card. This ability triggers only once each turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Mikey & Leo is a cheap GW +1/+1 counters commander that turns your counter synergies into card advantage—every turn you grow a creature, you refill your hand. You flood the board with counter-laden creatures, snowball card draw, and close with a wide-and-tall army before grinding opponents out of resources.

Strengths

  • Only 2 mana, so it comes down early and rebuys easily after removal
  • Converts counter synergies you already want into reliable card advantage
  • GW gives access to the best counter payoffs, anthems, and proliferate effects
  • Goes wide and tall simultaneously, hard for opponents to answer both

Weaknesses

  • Draw trigger is capped at one per turn, so it's incremental rather than explosive
  • Relies on creatures sticking—boardwipes hit the deck very hard
  • No interaction or evasion in the colors beyond combat tricks
  • Can be slow against dedicated combo decks that ignore the board

Key Cards

  • Hardened Scales — Amplifies every counter you place, accelerating both your board and your draws.
  • Branching Evolution — Doubles counters so your creatures balloon while still triggering Mikey & Leo once per turn.
  • Conclave Mentor — Adds counters and gains life, fueling the engine cheaply.
  • The Ozolith — Preserves counters through wipes and lets you redeploy your investment.
  • Evolution Sage — Proliferate on every land drop reliably triggers your card draw each turn.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Every creature you cast stacks counters everywhere, guaranteeing the draw trigger.

Upgrade Path

Add counter doublers and proliferate to maximize both stats and draws—Doubling Season, Innkeeper's Talent, and Inexorable Tide are all-stars. Tighten the curve with cheap enablers (Servant of the Conduit, Ignoble Hierarch) and add finishers like Craterhoof Behemoth or Triumph of the Hordes. Round out with protection (Heroic Intervention, Teferi's Protection) since boardwipes are your biggest threat.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Overrun the table with an oversized counter-laden army (Craterhoof Behemoth, Overwhelming Stampede)
  • ▸Pump a single evasive threat into a one-shot commander/voltron kill
  • ▸Grind opponents out with relentless card advantage and incremental beatdown

Archetypes

  • +1/+1 Counters — Its trigger directly rewards the colors' deepest counter package with card draw.
  • Tokens — Anthems and Cathars' Crusade let you counter-up a token swarm while drawing.
  • Go-Wide Aggro — Cheap commander plus counter anthems pressures the table early and often.
  • Proliferate Value — Proliferate effects guarantee a counter is placed each turn for consistent draws.
