BuildCard details

The Commander

Affinity for Spirits (This spell costs {1} less to cast for each Spirit you control.)

Flying

Whenever Millicent or another nontoken Spirit you control dies or deals combat damage to a player, create a 1/1 white Spirit creature token with flying.

Guide

Gameplan

Build a wide board of flying Spirits, deploy Millicent cheaply via Affinity, and let each Spirit's combat damage or death snowball into more 1/1 flyers. Attack in the air every turn while the token army grows, then close with an anthem or overrun effect for a lethal evasive swing.

Strengths

  • Self-replicating token engine that rebuilds after board wipes if any Spirits survive or are recast
  • Evasive flying army is hard to block and great for commander damage
  • Affinity for Spirits makes a 7-mana commander castable for as little as a couple mana
  • UW gives premium removal, counterspells, and protection to keep the engine online

Weaknesses

  • Token bodies are fragile 1/1s that fold to board wipes and sweepers
  • Relatively low impact if Millicent is removed and you lack a wide Spirit base
  • Slower to assemble than dedicated combo decks; can be outraced
  • Limited reach against high-toughness blockers without anthems or evasion buffs

Key Cards

  • Drogskol Captain — Anthems all your Spirits and grants hexproof, turning fragile tokens into a real threat and protecting them.
  • Skullclamp — Sacrifices 1/1 Spirit tokens for cards while triggering Millicent's death payoff, fueling relentless card advantage.
  • Path of Ancestry — Spirit-typed ramp/fixing that also scrys, slotting perfectly into a tribal Spirits manabase.
  • Intangible Virtue — Cheap anthem that buffs your token army and gives vigilance so you can attack and defend.
  • Shorikai, Genesis Engine — Not Spirit-specific but exemplifies UW card engines; better fits are Spirit lords—use Supreme Phantom to anthem all Spirit tokens.

Upgrade Path

Lean into Spirit lords (Supreme Phantom, Drogskol Captain, Empyrean Eagle) and anthems to make tokens lethal, then add sacrifice engines like Skullclamp and Viscera Seer with Zulaport Cutthroat effects to convert deaths into damage and cards. Tighten the manabase with Path of Ancestry, dual lands, and efficient UW removal/counters, and finish with a payoff like Akroma's Will or Craterhoof Behemoth for explosive turns.

Core Cards

  • Supreme Phantom
  • Rattlechains
  • Boreas Charger
  • Darksteel Mutation
  • Twilight Drover
  • Ghostly Pilferer
  • Spectral Sailor
  • Port Town
  • Arcane Denial
  • Verity Circle
  • Hanged Executioner
  • Marble Diamond

Win Conditions

  • ▸Wide flying Spirit swarm buffed by anthems for lethal aerial damage
  • ▸Commander damage from Millicent plus Spirit lords
  • ▸Overrun-style finishers like Craterhoof Behemoth or Akroma's Will on a token-heavy board
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Zulaport Cutthroat/Bastion of Remembrance off mass token sacrifice

Archetypes

  • Tokens — Millicent constantly spawns flying Spirit tokens from combat damage and deaths, scaling go-wide strategies.
  • Spirit Tribal — Affinity and the token trigger reward a dense Spirit creature base with lords and tribal payoffs.
  • Aristocrats — Each nontoken Spirit dying makes a token, so sacrifice outlets and recursion turn deaths into value.
  • Aggro/Flyers — Evasive flying army pressures life totals and stacks anthems for fast aerial kills.
