BuildCard details

The Commander

Mistform Ultimus is every creature type (even if this card isn't on the battlefield).

Guide

Gameplan

Mistform Ultimus is a 3/3 that is literally every creature type, letting you abuse cards that reward or care about specific tribes regardless of what those tribes are. You build a tribal-payoff shell in mono-blue, deploy cheap lords and tribe-matters effects, then ride a stack of buffs and protection to a Voltron or wide-board kill. Turn to turn you develop card advantage, drop lords that pump the team (and your commander specifically), and grind toward an overwhelming evasive threat.

Strengths

  • Counts as Merfolk, Wizards, Pirates, etc. so any single-tribe lord pumps it
  • Mono-blue gives access to the best card draw, counterspells, and protection in the format
  • Cheap commander that benefits from a low curve of utility lords
  • Synergy ceiling is high with cards that name a creature type — it always 'hits'

Weaknesses

  • A vanilla 3/3 with no evasion or built-in protection on its own
  • Heavily dependent on having lords/payoffs in play, so removal sets you back hard
  • Mono-blue lacks efficient creature removal and any real lifegain
  • Many tribal lords only pump one color or type, diluting the consistency of a 'no-tribe' tribal deck
  • Easily chump-blocked or swept before it becomes lethal

Key Cards

  • Coat of Arms — Pumps every creature by every shared type, and Ultimus shares a type with literally everything you control.
  • Kindred Discovery — Naming any type means Ultimus and tribal-type tokens trigger constantly for explosive card draw.
  • Door of Destinies — Choose any creature type and Ultimus grows with every spell of that type you cast.
  • Lord of Atlantis — Cheap lord that pumps and gives islandwalk to Ultimus since it's a Merfolk.
  • Adaptive Automaton — Flexible anthem that names a type to buff Ultimus regardless of your other creatures.
  • Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof and haste keep your fragile 3/3 commander alive and aggressive.
  • Cover of Darkness — Name any type to give Ultimus near-unblockable fear-style evasion for Voltron damage.
  • Cryptic Command — Premier blue flexibility to protect your board, draw, and tempo your way to the win.

Upgrade Path

Lean into universal payoffs (Coat of Arms, Kindred Discovery, Door of Destinies) rather than narrow single-tribe lords, since those scale best with a creature that's every type. Add the best mono-blue protection and tutors — Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves, Whir of Invention for artifacts — plus cheap counterspells (Swan Song, Mana Drain) to defend your fragile threat. To climb further, add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crystals) and a clean evasion package so Ultimus reliably connects for commander-damage kills.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage from a buffed, evasive Mistform Ultimus loaded with anthems and equipment
  • ▸Going wide with creature tokens that all benefit from Coat of Arms-style universal pumps
  • ▸Drawing into and resolving a blue control finisher while protecting a lethal board
  • ▸Overwhelming the table once multiple lords and Door of Destinies/Coat of Arms stack

Archetypes

  • Tribal Goodstuff — Ultimus is every type, so you can run any tribal lords and payoffs and they all apply to it.
  • Voltron — Stack anthems, equipment, and evasion to make the universal-type 3/3 a one-card kill.
  • Control — Mono-blue lets you counter and bounce threats while your tribal payoffs assemble a board.
  • Mono-Blue Tempo — Cheap lords plus countermagic and card draw let you pressure while staying reactive.
