The Commander

Flying

Whenever you cast a historic spell, return target nonland permanent card from your graveyard to the battlefield. It gains haste. Exile it at the beginning of the next end step. If it would leave the battlefield, exile it instead of putting it anywhere else. (Artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas are historic.)

Guide

Gameplan

Cast historic spells (artifacts, legendaries, Sagas) to flicker permanents back from your graveyard each turn, generating value or chaining death triggers. You build an engine where each historic cast reanimates something with haste, then exile it on end step—so you abuse enters/leaves triggers and sacrifice fodder repeatedly. Win by looping aristocrat triggers, repeatable reanimation value, or a big combo turn fueled by cheap artifacts.

Strengths

  • Free temporary reanimation every historic cast, with most of your spells naturally being historic (artifacts/legendaries)
  • Excellent with ETB and death triggers, enabling powerful aristocrats loops
  • BW gives access to the best recursion, tutors, and removal
  • Flying body makes it a relevant clock and harder to chump

Weaknesses

  • Reanimated permanents are exiled at end of turn, so you only get one-turn value unless you sacrifice them
  • Heavily reliant on the commander—gets taxed and removed easily
  • Needs both a graveyard target and a steady stream of historic spells to function
  • Can be slow and grindy without dedicated combo lines

Key Cards

  • Ashnod's Altar — Sacrifices reanimated creatures for mana before they exile, converting flicker value into loops.
  • Blood Artist — Turns every sacrificed reanimation target into incremental drain, a core aristocrats payoff.
  • Sun Titan — Reanimating it triggers its own recursion, and it's a strong historic-fueled value engine.
  • Mox Amber — A cheap historic artifact that triggers Moira and Teshar's ability for nearly free.
  • Animate Dead — Permanent reanimation to complement the temporary loops, and it's a historic-adjacent enabler when stacked with cheap spells.
  • Karmic Guide — Loops with sacrifice outlets and altars to reanimate creatures repeatedly each cast.

Upgrade Path

Lower your curve with cheap historic artifacts (Mox Amber, Foundry Inspector, Universal Automaton) to maximize triggers per turn, and add sacrifice outlets like Ashnod's Altar and Viscera Seer to keep value before exile. Slot tutors (Demonic Tutor, Enlightened Tutor) and stronger aristocrat payoffs (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, Bastion of Remembrance) to assemble consistent kills. Add fast mana and a few interaction pieces to protect the commander and close before the table stabilizes.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Infinite aristocrat drain via sacrifice loops (Blood Artist + Ashnod's Altar + reanimation chain)
  • ▸Repeatable ETB engines grinding out the table and finishing with token swarms or drain
  • ▸Beatdown with reanimated threats plus the flying commander
  • ▸Combo kill assembling free historic casts into an infinite loop with a payoff like Zulaport Cutthroat

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Repeatedly reanimate creatures with haste, sacrifice them for value, and drain with death-trigger payoffs.
  • Reanimator — Cheap historic spells continuously pull threats and value engines back from the graveyard.
  • Combo — Chaining cheap artifacts plus sacrifice outlets and a recursion loop creates infinite ETB/death triggers.
  • Value Midrange — Each turn flickers a powerful permanent for repeatable ETB advantage.
