BuildCard details

The Commander

When Molten Man enters, search your library for a basic Mountain card, put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle.

Molten Man gets +1/+1 for each Mountain you control.

When Molten Man leaves the battlefield, sacrifice a land.

Guide

Gameplan

Ramp into Mountains, swing with a steadily growing Molten Man, and close games through combat damage or burn. Early turns set up land ramp and mono-red staples; midgame you protect Molten Man, give it trample/double strike, and turn your land count into a lethal beater while burn spells and impulse draw keep pressure on.

Strengths

  • Self-ramps a Mountain on entry, smoothing your curve and growing immediately
  • Scales with your land count, becoming a huge threat in mono-red lands-matter shells
  • Cheap commander (MV3) that's easy to recast and lands in play early
  • Synergizes with land-fetch and landfall effects to snowball power

Weaknesses

  • Removal-dependent threat: dies to spot removal and forces a land sacrifice on leaving
  • Mono-red lacks card draw and ramp diversity outside artifacts and impulse draw
  • No evasion baked in, so a single blocker or fog can stall the swing
  • Vulnerable to board wipes and the punishing leaves-the-battlefield clause

Key Cards

  • Embercleave — Cheap with a wide board and grants double strike plus trample to make Molten Man instantly lethal.
  • Fervor — Haste lets a recast Molten Man attack immediately, capitalizing on its size before removal arrives.
  • Scapeshift — Floods the battlefield with Mountains to spike Molten Man's power and trigger landfall payoffs.
  • Crucible of Worlds — Replays sacrificed lands, blunting the leaves-the-battlefield drawback and fueling landfall.
  • Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle — Turns your Mountain-heavy ramp into repeatable burn damage as a backup win route.
  • Rogue's Passage — Pushes a giant Molten Man through for unblockable commander damage.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Jeweled Lotus, Mana Crypt) and land-doubling like Scapeshift and Splendid Reclamation to inflate power faster. Lean into protection (Heroic Intervention, Lightning Greaves) and evasion (Rogue's Passage, trample sources) so Molten Man survives and connects. For higher power, build a landfall-Valakut burn package and a recast-protection suite to dodge the sacrifice-a-land downside.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Connect with an evasive, equipped Molten Man for lethal commander damage
  • ▸Double strike via Embercleave or Fireblade Charger for a one-shot kill
  • ▸Valakut triggers from mass Mountain entries burning out the table
  • ▸Burn finishers and impulse-draw aggression after combat softens players

Archetypes

  • Lands / Landfall — Molten Man rewards a high Mountain count and ramp, pairing with Scapeshift and landfall payoffs.
  • Voltron — A self-growing creature that wants haste, evasion, and equipment to one-shot opponents.
  • Big Mana Aggro — Ramp into Mountains to deploy a colossal body and overwhelm with burn support.
