BuildCard details

The Commander

{1}, Discard a card: Until end of turn, Mondo Gecko becomes the color of your choice and gains hexproof from that color.

Whenever Mondo Gecko deals combat damage to a player, draw a card for each color among permanents you control.

Guide

Gameplan

Mondo Gecko is a mono-blue evasive value engine: suit it up with unblockable and protection effects, swing in, and refill your hand on every connection. The draw scales with how many colors are among your permanents, and since Mondo's first ability turns it a non-blue color, you reliably net at least two cards per hit (your blue board + Mondo's chosen color) while dodging targeted removal.

Strengths

  • On-demand hexproof from a color of your choice makes Mondo extremely hard to kill in response to spot removal or combat tricks
  • Repeatable card advantage that snowballs once it connects, refueling control plans and discard outlets
  • Mono-blue consistency: easy access to counmagic, evasion, card filtering, and clean tutoring
  • Cheap commander (MV 3) that comes down early and demands answers

Weaknesses

  • The draw trigger is capped low in a mono-blue identity—getting beyond 2-3 colors among permanents takes dedicated build-around
  • The protection ability costs mana plus a card every turn, which adds up
  • Entirely combat-dependent; chump blockers, fogs, or 'can't be blocked'-hate stop the value cold
  • Vulnerable to board wipes and edicts that ignore hexproof, and to non-color-based removal

Key Cards

  • Painter's Servant — Adds a chosen color to every permanent you control, instantly bumping your draw count by one across the board.
  • Aqueous Form — Cheap unblockable plus scry guarantees Mondo connects every turn to fire the draw trigger.
  • Rogue's Passage — Repeatable unblockable on a land slot so you don't over-invest in fragile auras.
  • Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive — Makes low-power or single-toughness attackers unblockable, keeping Mondo's damage flowing.
  • Thassa, God of the Sea — Reliable evasion each turn plus card filtering and an indestructible body that supports the tempo plan.
  • Prismatic Lace — Permanently changes a permanent's color so you can manufacture extra colors among your board for bigger draws.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Evasion versus a color, protection, plus untapping lands to keep mana up for Mondo's activated ability and counterspells.

Upgrade Path

Lean into color-changing effects (Painter's Servant, Prismatic Lace, Crystal Spray) and clones so you consistently draw three or more cards per hit instead of two. Tighten the evasion package and add layered protection like Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, and counterspells so Mondo survives the turn it lands. Cap the deck with a compact win like Thassa's Oracle plus Demonic Consultation, an infinite-mana payoff, or a stax-light control shell to convert your card lead into a closed game.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Repeated unblockable swings dealing 21 commander damage to a single opponent
  • ▸Snowballing card advantage into a blue combo or infinite mana/draw finisher
  • ▸Grinding the table out with countermagic, bounce, and overwhelming card volume
  • ▸Mill or sphinx-style alternative wins fueled by the constant draw

Archetypes

  • Tempo / Voltron — Cheap evasive commander with built-in protection wants auras and equipment to hit hard and draw cards every turn.
  • Mono-Blue Control — The draw engine refuels a counterspell-and-bounce shell so you can answer threats while out-carding the table.
  • Spellslinger / Big-Mana Combo — Constant card flow digs toward blue combo finishers and storm-style payoffs once you're hellbent on protection.
  • Clones / Shapeshifters — Copy effects can mimic colored permanents and replicate evasion, padding both your color count and your damage.
