The Commander

Flying, vigilance, lifelink

{U}{B}, Exile this card from your graveyard: Look at the top three cards of your library. Put one of them into your hand and the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.

Guide

Gameplan

Morbius is a cheap, evasive lifelink threat that pressures the board while gaining you life, then provides card advantage from the graveyard even after he dies. Play a Dimir control-leaning midrange shell that protects Morbius, abuses his lifegain payoffs, and grinds opponents out with recursion and card selection. Win by chipping in with evasive damage backed by lifegain or by leveraging the life buffer to pivot into a control finish.

Strengths

  • Flying, vigilance, and lifelink on a 4-mana body make him an efficient attacker and blocker that stabilizes life totals.
  • Built-in card advantage: even after dying he can be exiled from the graveyard to dig three deep for a card.
  • Cheap to recast for a 4-mana commander, keeping him on the board through removal.
  • Lifelink enables a wide lifegain-matters subtheme in Dimir, a color pair short on dedicated lifegain payoffs.

Weaknesses

  • No stated power/toughness reference in rules text means he relies on buffs to threaten meaningful damage as Voltron.
  • The graveyard ability is a one-shot effect that exiles him, so it's slow card advantage, not engine-level.
  • Dimir lacks ramp, so explosive starts and big mana finishes are hard to assemble.
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate, which strips his post-death value, and to exile removal that denies recursion entirely.

Key Cards

  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Trample/protection and the untap-lands trigger turn Morbius's evasion into a devastating, mana-positive Voltron threat.
  • Whip of Erebos — Grants all your creatures lifelink and reanimates, doubling down on the lifegain plan and recurring threats.
  • Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose — Converts Morbius's steady lifegain into direct life loss for each opponent, providing a real kill condition.
  • Sanguine Bond — Pairs with any lifegain to drain the table, a classic combo finish supported by Morbius's lifelink.
  • Reconnaissance — Lets Morbius attack freely and pull back before damage, abusing his vigilance and protecting the body.
  • Lim-Dul's Vault — Stacks your library for the graveyard ability and smooths a control shell that wants specific answers.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and ramp rocks (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone) to outpace Dimir's natural slowness, and tighten card selection with cantrips and tutors like Vampiric Tutor and Demonic Tutor. Lean into a compact combo finish (Sanguine Bond + lifegain, or Exquisite Blood loops) so the lifegain plan actually closes games, and round out with premium interaction (Counterspell, Swords to Plowshares is off-color—use Cut Down, Fatal Push, Go for the Throat) to protect your engine.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Voltron beatdown with Morbius wearing equipment for evasive, lifelinking commander damage.
  • ▸Lifegain-to-drain combos like Vito or Sanguine Bond paired with any lifegain trigger.
  • ▸Grinding opponents out with superior card advantage and recursion in a control shell.
  • ▸Reanimated fat threats backed by the life cushion Morbius provides.

Archetypes

  • Lifegain Aristocrats/Drain — Lifelink fuels Vito and Sanguine Bond effects to convert gained life into opponent life loss.
  • Voltron — Evasion plus vigilance makes Morbius an ideal equipment and aura carrier that stays back on defense.
  • Dimir Control — The recursive card selection and lifelink buffer support a removal-and-counters grind to a late-game win.
  • Reanimator — His graveyard synergy and Dimir's recursion reward filling the yard and bringing threats back repeatedly.
