The Commander

Flying

Primarch of the Death Guard — At the beginning of your end step, you may pay {X}. If you do, create X 2/2 black Astartes Warrior creature tokens with menace. X can't be greater than the amount of life you lost this turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Mortarion is a mono-black token engine that turns your own life loss into an army. Pay life (or lose it to your own cards) every turn, then at your end step pay {X} to make X menacing 2/2 Astartes, with X capped by the life you lost that turn. You grind the table down with a self-damaging value engine, recouping life via lifelink and drain while flooding the board, then close with a wide swarm or an aristocrats finish.

Strengths

  • Converts a fundamental cost (life) into a recurring, scalable token army, making aggressive life payments pure upside
  • Mono-black gives access to the format's best tutors, ramp (Cabal Coffers, etc.), and removal for consistency
  • Token production fuels aristocrats payoffs, sacrifice value, and go-wide alpha strikes simultaneously
  • 3/4 flier is an evasive, reasonable body that pressures life totals on its own
  • Self-life-loss themes pair naturally with lifegain and life-as-resource cards to refuel the engine

Weaknesses

  • Mono-black struggles to interact with the stack and lacks efficient artifact/enchantment removal
  • The end-step tokens require open mana, competing with holding up interaction or other plays
  • Heavily reliant on the commander; repeated removal or counters stall the whole engine
  • Board wipes punish the go-wide plan hard
  • Aggressively paying life makes you vulnerable to burn, other aristocrats decks, and racing

Key Cards

  • Bolas's Citadel — Lets you cast off the top by paying life, generating exactly the self-inflicted life loss Mortarion converts into tokens.
  • Phyrexian Arena — Repeatable card draw that loses you life every turn, feeding Mortarion's token trigger for free.
  • Cabal Coffers — Provides the explosive mana needed to pump {X} large at your end step.
  • Skullclamp — Turns your endless stream of 2/2 tokens into a relentless card-draw engine.
  • Bloodletter of Aphetto — Doubles life-loss effects, both punishing opponents and inflating the life you 'lost' for bigger token counts.
  • Zulaport Cutthroat — Drains the table each time your Astartes die, converting the token swarm into a sacrifice win.

Upgrade Path

Lean into engines that pay life or lose it as a cost—Bolas's Citadel, Necropotence, Phyrexian Arena—so every turn maximizes {X}. Add aristocrats payoffs (Blood Artist, Bastion of Remembrance), token doublers, and big mana (Cabal Coffers, Nykthos, Cabal Stronghold) to push raw power, plus protection like Lightning Greaves and reanimation/tutors to keep Mortarion sticky and consistent.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Alpha strike with a wide board of menace Astartes backed by anthems or overruns like Coat of Arms
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Zulaport Cutthroat, Blood Artist, and mass token sacrifice
  • ▸Beat down with the evasive 3/4 flier alongside chip damage from the swarm
  • ▸Combo finishes like Gray Merchant of Asphodel or a sacrifice loop with Bloodletter doubling the drain

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — A steady flow of expendable tokens plus self-damage payoffs makes sacrifice-and-drain a natural fit.
  • Tokens / Go-Wide — The end-step trigger reliably builds a menacing army for anthem-backed alpha strikes.
  • Life-as-Resource — Cards that pay life for value (Citadel, fast mana, painful draw) directly scale Mortarion's token output.
  • Mono-Black Midrange — Tutors, removal, and big mana support a grindy value plan around the commander.
