BuildCard details

The Commander

Flying

When Moseo enters, create a 1/1 black and green Pest creature token with "Whenever this token attacks, you gain 1 life."

Infusion — At the beginning of your end step, if you gained life this turn, return up to one target creature card with mana value X or less from your graveyard to the battlefield, where X is the amount of life you gained this turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Moseo is a mono-black reanimation engine fueled by lifegain. Each turn you gain life, then at your end step return a creature from your graveyard with mana value up to the life you gained that turn. You build a self-mill/discard package to stock the yard, ramp into lifegain payoffs, and recur threats every turn to grind opponents into the dirt or assemble a value/combo loop.

Strengths

  • Free recursion every turn so long as you gain even 1 life, generating relentless card advantage.
  • Comes down cheap at 3 mana with evasion and immediately makes a Pest blocker/attacker.
  • Mono-black gives access to the deepest tutor, reanimation, and lifedrain suites in the format.
  • Lifegain doubles as both a resource and a fuel source, turning incidental gain into reanimated bombs.

Weaknesses

  • Reanimation caps at the life you gained, so without a payoff you only return cheap creatures.
  • Graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) shuts the engine off entirely.
  • Mono-black struggles to deal with resolved artifacts and enchantments.
  • Wants creatures in the yard, creating tension between filling the graveyard and protecting the board.

Key Cards

  • Aetherflux Reservoir — Stacks massive lifegain to both enable huge reanimation targets and win outright at 50 life.
  • Gray Merchant of Asphodel — Devotion-fueled drain gains big life to reanimate, and can be recurred each turn for repeated kills.
  • Reassembling Skeleton — A cheap, repeatable body to sacrifice and re-buy that always fits under low life-gain totals.
  • Cabal Coffers — Mono-black ramp engine that powers out reanimation payoffs and big lifegain spells.
  • Sheoldred, the Apocalypse — Turns your card draw into lifegain to fuel Infusion while punishing opponents' draws.
  • Buried Alive — Loads the graveyard with exactly the fatties you want Moseo to recur.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mono-black ramp (Dark Ritual, Cabal Coffers, Nykthos) and tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Diabolic Intent) to consistently find your lifegain payoffs and best reanimation targets. Lean into a sacrifice subtheme with Viscera Seer, Blood Artist, and Zulaport Cutthroat so every loop both gains life and drains opponents, then top out with high-impact reanimation targets like Sheoldred, Whispering One or Razaketh. Protect the engine with Crypt Incursion and graveyard recursion, and consider a reanimate-loop combo finish for higher-power tables.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Recurring Gray Merchant of Asphodel or other drain effects to bleed the table out.
  • ▸Aetherflux Reservoir burst kill after stacking life from your gain triggers.
  • ▸Beating down with repeatedly reanimated evasive bombs and the Pest army.
  • ▸Assembling a sacrifice/aristocrat loop for incremental life loss across the table.

Archetypes

  • Reanimator — Infusion returns a creature every end step, so the deck is built to dump and recur huge threats.
  • Aristocrats — Sacrificing reanimated bodies for value and life feeds the lifegain trigger that powers reanimation.
  • Lifegain Midrange — Lifegain payoffs like Gray Merchant and Aetherflux Reservoir double as engine fuel and finishers.
  • Combo — Reanimate-and-sacrifice loops with creatures like Gravecrawler and a sac outlet can grind infinite value.
