The Commander

Myojin of Night's Reach enters with a divinity counter on it if you cast it from your hand.

Myojin of Night's Reach has indestructible as long as it has a divinity counter on it.

Remove a divinity counter from Myojin of Night's Reach: Each opponent discards their hand.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast a heavy mono-black control/discard deck that strips opponents' resources, then drop Myojin off your hand to load it with a divinity counter and pop it to wipe every opponent's hand at once. From there you grind on card advantage while they topdeck, finishing with a big threat or reanimation engine. The deck is about resource denial, recursion, and inevitability.

Strengths

  • One-sided mass discard that can devastate combo, control, and reactive decks in a single activation
  • Mono-black gives unrivaled tutoring, recursion, and black's deep card-draw suite
  • Indestructible while the divinity counter sits on it makes Myojin hard to remove before you fire the ability
  • Pairs naturally with hand-attack and stax effects opponents can't easily rebuild from

Weaknesses

  • The hand-wipe is a one-shot effect unless you recur the counter or recast Myojin; it doesn't recur on its own
  • An 8-mana 5/2 is fragile the moment the counter is spent and contributes little to the board
  • Mono-black lacks countermagic and struggles against artifacts, enchantments, and big resilient board states
  • Timing matters—dump it when opponents have empty hands and you've wasted it

Key Cards

  • Bontu's Monument — Mana reduction helps you cast the 8-mana Myojin a turn early so the divinity counter actually triggers.
  • Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx — Devotion-fueled ramp in mono-black makes casting and recasting Myojin realistic.
  • Liliana of the Veil — Stacks symmetrical and edict discard pressure so opponents never recover from the hand wipe.
  • Reanimate — Cheaply returns Myojin to play—though note reanimated copies don't get the divinity counter, so pair carefully.
  • Cabal Coffers — Explosive black mana to power out Myojin and the rest of your big-mana payoffs.
  • Bottomless Pit — Continuous discard locks opponents out after the initial Myojin blowout.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and cost reducers (Dark Ritual, Cabal Ritual, Bontu's Monument) so Myojin lands while opponents still have full grips—an empty hand makes the ability worthless. Layer in continuous discard (Bottomless Pit, Megrim, Necrogen Mists) and recursion (Liliana of the Veil, Reanimate, Animate Dead) to convert the one-time wipe into a true lock, then finish with a devotion payoff like Gray Merchant of Asphodel. Premium tutors (Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor) and mana rocks tighten consistency at higher power levels.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Lock opponents out of cards via repeated discard, then beat down with recurring threats
  • ▸Reanimate or hard-cast large finishers like Gray Merchant of Asphodel or an evasive bomb
  • ▸Combo kill with mono-black engines (e.g., Mikaeus + recursion) under a discard lock
  • ▸Grind everyone to topdeck mode and win the long card-advantage war

Archetypes

  • Discard / Hand Disruption — Myojin's ability is a one-sided mass discard that anchors a dedicated resource-denial shell.
  • Stax / Control — Stripping hands while denying mana and recursion lets you grind the table into the dirt.
  • Reanimator — Black's reanimation lets you cheat out and rebuy threats while opponents have no answers in hand.
  • Mono-Black Devotion Midrange — Heavy black pips power Nykthos and devotion payoffs to ramp into Myojin and beyond.
