The Commander

During your turn, your opponents can't cast spells or activate abilities of artifacts, creatures, or enchantments.

Whenever Myrel attacks, create X 1/1 colorless Soldier artifact creature tokens, where X is the number of Soldiers you control.

Guide

Gameplan

Myrel is a mono-white Soldier tokens commander that snowballs an army while shutting your opponents out of the game on your turn. You build a wide board of Soldiers, attack to exponentially double your token count, and protect yourself behind Myrel's Silence-on-a-stick effect to push through alpha strikes or anthem damage.

Strengths

  • Exponential token doubling that wins board-state races fast
  • Built-in protection: opponents can't cast spells or activate abilities during your turn, neutering counterspells and instant-speed removal/blockers when you attack
  • Synergizes with the deep mono-white Soldier and go-wide support package
  • Color-light cost means easy to splash anthems, equipment, and recursion

Weaknesses

  • Mono-white means weak interaction, card draw, and ramp relative to other colors
  • Highly commander-dependent; loses tempo badly if Myrel is repeatedly killed
  • Vulnerable to sweepers like Wrath of God and Cyclonic Rift that reset your board
  • No protection on opponents' turns, so they can still respond before combat or after you pass

  • Skullclamp — Turns your 1/1 Soldier tokens into a relentless card-draw engine.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Each token entering pumps your whole board, snowballing absurdly with Myrel's mass token generation.
  • Coat of Arms — Massively boosts your tribal Soldier swarm into lethal range.
  • Intangible Virtue — Anthem plus vigilance makes attacking with a token army safe and aggressive.
  • Adeline, Resplendent Cathar — Another go-wide token producer that scales with opponents and feeds the Soldier count.

Upgrade Path

Add more token doublers and anthems (Anointed Procession, Divine Visitation) plus an overrun effect like Craterhoof Behemoth to convert the board into a one-shot kill. Improve mono-white's weak points with fast mana (Sol Ring, Smothering Tithe, mana rocks) and recursion for Myrel (Swords to Plowshares insurance, protective equipment like Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots). Top-end card advantage from Skullclamp, Welcoming Vampire, and Mentor of the Meek keeps the swarm refueled against sweepers.
