BuildCard details

The Commander

When Mysterio enters, create a 3/3 blue Illusion Villain creature token for each nontoken Villain you control. Exile those tokens when Mysterio leaves the battlefield.

Guide

Gameplan

Build a mono-blue Villain typal deck that floods the board with 3/3 Illusion tokens, then leverages mono-blue's control suite and clone/blink effects to multiply Mysterio's enter trigger. You ramp into Mysterio, stack nontoken Villains beforehand, and either swing wide or grind out the table with counterspells and card draw while your token army snowballs.

Strengths

  • Mono-blue gives access to the format's best counterspells, card draw, and bounce/protection
  • Mysterio's trigger scales fast—each nontoken Villain doubles your token output on re-entry
  • Easy to abuse with blink and clone effects to retrigger the ETB
  • Cheap four-mana commander that immediately impacts the board

Weaknesses

  • Tokens are exiled when Mysterio leaves, so removing him erases your whole army
  • Mono-blue struggles with permanent-based removal and lacks efficient creature destruction
  • Villain creature pool is shallow and color-restricted, weakening pure typal density
  • Board wipes are devastating since your power is concentrated in fragile tokens

Key Cards

  • Ghostly Flicker — Blinks Mysterio to retrigger the token-making ETB and rebuild after a wipe.
  • Deadeye Navigator — Repeatable blink engine to flood the board with Illusion tokens each turn.
  • Cyclonic Rift — Mono-blue's premier one-sided board reset to clear the way for a token alpha strike.
  • Rhystic Study — Keeps your hand full to fuel counterspells and rebuild after removal.
  • Heroic Intervention — Wait—out of color; instead Swiftfoot Boots protects Mysterio so his tokens survive.
  • Brago, King Eternal — As a blink commander-adjacent piece (if in 99) repeatedly flickers permanents to multiply triggers.

Upgrade Path

Add more blink and clone enablers (Deadeye Navigator, Ghostly Flicker, Phantasmal Image) to repeatedly retrigger the ETB, and prioritize cheap nontoken Villains to maximize token yield. Shore up the board-wipe weakness with protection like Swiftfoot Boots and recursion, and lean into mono-blue staples (Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Cyclonic Rift). For a higher ceiling, include an Overrun-style payoff or Craterhoof-adjacent blue alternatives like Coat of Arms and Intruder Alarm-style engines.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Swinging wide with a large Illusion token army for combat damage
  • ▸Overrun-style finishers or anthem effects pumping the token board
  • ▸Grinding the table out with counterspells and card advantage until you alpha strike
  • ▸Clone/blink loops generating an overwhelming token count

Archetypes

  • Tokens — Mysterio directly manufactures a wide 3/3 Illusion army that scales with your Villains.
  • Blink — Flicker effects retrigger his ETB to pump out fresh tokens every cycle.
  • Control — Mono-blue counters and card draw protect the board and grind opponents down.
  • Tribal/Typal — Stacking nontoken Villains maximizes the number of tokens each entrance creates.
