BuildCard details

The Commander

Bushido 1 (Whenever this creature blocks or becomes blocked, it gets +1/+1 until end of turn.)

Whenever Nagao attacks, Samurai creatures you control get +1/+1 until end of turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Nagao is a mono-white aggressive tribal commander that floods the board with Samurai (and warriors broadly) and turns them sideways for a coordinated alpha strike. Curve out with efficient creatures and anthem effects, attack to pump the team with Nagao's trigger, and close before opponents stabilize. You're racing, so prioritize tempo and going wide.

Strengths

  • Cheap, repeatable team pump every combat that snowballs board states
  • Mono-white means consistent mana and access to the best anthems, equipment, and go-wide payoffs
  • Resilient against single-target removal since the deck doesn't rely on one threat
  • Strong synergy with first strike/double strike to amplify Bushido and attack pumps

Weaknesses

  • Mono-white card advantage is poor; runs out of gas after a board wipe
  • Few true Samurai exist, forcing flexible tribal/aggro builds
  • Highly vulnerable to sweepers like Wrath of God and Toxic Deluge
  • No evasion or reach baked in—stalled ground boards stop the gameplan
  • Underpowered in fast cEDH or combo-heavy pods

Key Cards

  • Konda's Banner — Legendary equipment that pumps your whole Samurai team and grants Nagao protection, doubling as anthem and shield.
  • Kaldra Compleat — Equipment that turns any Samurai into a hasty, indestructible, trample-and-first-strike beater.
  • Eldrazi Monument — Grants flying and indestructibility, giving your go-wide board evasion and sweeper protection.
  • Skullclamp — Solves mono-white's card-draw problem by cashing in cheap tokens and dying Samurai.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Snowballs counters across your whole board every time a creature enters, turning go-wide into overwhelming size.
  • Smuggler's Copter — Cheap evasive crew outlet that loots, fixing card flow while attacking.

Upgrade Path

Lean harder into payoffs that beat sweepers—add Heroic Intervention-style protection (white's Flawless Maneuver, Teferi's Protection) and recursion like Faith's Reward. Improve card advantage with Welcoming Vampire, Mentor of the Meek, and Skullclamp so you refuel after wraths. Add a critical mass of evasion and haste enablers so your wide boards convert to lethal before the table stabilizes.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Coordinated alpha strike after Nagao's pump and anthem effects
  • ▸Evasive beats via Eldrazi Monument or equipment-granted flying/trample
  • ▸Voltron damage with Kaldra Compleat or stacked auras/equipment on one Samurai
  • ▸Overwhelming counters from Cathars' Crusade making blocks irrelevant

Archetypes

  • Tribal Aggro — Nagao's attack trigger directly rewards stacking Samurai and warrior-type creatures for repeated team pumps.
  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Mono-white token generators flood the board, then Nagao and anthems push lethal damage.
  • Voltron-lite — Equipment and Bushido make Nagao or a single Samurai a hard-to-block threat backed by protection gear.
  • Weenie / Stax-aggro — Cheap creatures plus white's tax pieces like Thalia let you race while slowing the table.
