Gameplan

Nardole is a mana battery that loads up on counters (via proliferate, undying recursion, and counter-doublers) and taps for huge amounts of blue mana to fuel noncreature spells—artifacts, big X-spells, and storm-style chains. As a Doctor's companion he's almost always paired with a blue Doctor (or a multicolor one), so build around an artifacts/spellslinger engine that ramps explosively off his activation. Stack counters early, then unload on a single turn with draw, artifact ramp, and a finisher.

Strengths

  • Generates a massive burst of blue mana that scales with counters, enabling explosive noncreature turns
  • Undying makes him resilient—he comes back with a +1/+1 counter, immediately boosting his mana output
  • Slots into proliferate and counters-matter shells that grow his output every turn
  • Cheap two-mana body that comes down early and starts accumulating value fast
  • Doctor's companion gives you a second commander and free color flexibility depending on your Doctor

Weaknesses

  • Mana is restricted to noncreature spells only, so it doesn't help cast creatures
  • Needs setup—at zero counters he taps for nothing, so he's a slow build-around
  • Mono-blue alone is light on removal and ramp without the right Doctor partner
  • Counter removal or 'remove all counters' effects shut down his mana entirely
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate and exile-based removal that bypasses undying

  • Doubling Season — Doubles the counters placed on Nardole, instantly multiplying his mana output.
  • Hardened Scales — Cheap way to pile extra +1/+1 counters onto Nardole every time he gets one.
  • Inexorable Tide — Proliferates on every spell cast, steadily ramping Nardole's counter count and mana.
  • The Chain Veil — Lets you reactivate Nardole and other tap abilities for repeated huge mana bursts.
  • Karn's Bastion — Repeatable proliferate from a land to grow Nardole and your mana reliably.
  • Blue Sun's Zenith — A blue X-spell that drains Nardole's enormous mana into card draw and a mill kill.

Upgrade Path

Add fast counter accumulation (Hardened Scales, Branching Evolution, Doubling Season) plus repeatable proliferate to spike his mana ceiling quickly. Lean into untap and reuse effects like The Chain Veil or Thousand-Year Elixir, and pick a Doctor partner whose colors patch blue's removal and ramp gaps. Top-end payoffs—huge X draw spells, artifact combos, or extra-turn loops—convert the explosive mana into actual wins.

  • Artifacts/Ramp — Noncreature artifact spells are exactly what his mana can pay for, chaining into more ramp.
  • +1/+1 Counters / Proliferate — Counters on Nardole equal mana, so proliferate and counter-doublers scale his engine.
  • Control — He bankrolls counterspells, board wipes, and draw to grind out the table.
