BuildCard details

The Commander

Flying

Exalted (Whenever a creature you control attacks alone, that creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.)

Whenever Nefarox attacks alone, defending player sacrifices a creature of their choice.

Guide

Gameplan

Nefarox is a mono-black voltron/attrition commander who swings alone every turn, growing via Exalted while forcing the defending player to sacrifice a creature. Stack more Exalted effects and evasion to turn his 5/3 flying body into a fast clock, while black's removal and recursion keep the board clear. You win by suiting him up and connecting, or by grinding opponents out of creatures and resources.

Strengths

  • Repeatable edict effect on attack pressures decks reliant on key creatures
  • Exalted synergy lets a single attacker hit absurdly hard
  • Mono-black gives access to premium tutors, removal, and recursion
  • Built-in evasion (flying) makes him hard to chump and easy to connect

Weaknesses

  • Edict only triggers when he attacks alone, so go-wide token decks blunt it
  • Only 3 toughness makes him fragile to burn and combat tricks
  • Single-color means no access to blue counters or green ramp/protection
  • Heavy reliance on the commander invites commander-removal and tax

Key Cards

  • Finest Hour — Grants an extra combat phase when Nefarox attacks alone, doubling Exalted growth and edict triggers.
  • Sublime Archangel — Pumps your lone attacker with multiple Exalted instances—wait, mono-black only, so prefer black Exalted enablers, but generically stacks attack power.
  • Whip of Erebos — Lifelink keeps you alive while swinging alone and enables a recursion plan.
  • Grafted Exoskeleton — Turns a single connection with Nefarox into a fast infect/poison kill.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Protection, evasion, and ramp on a commander that always attacks alone.
  • Whispersilk Cloak — Unblockable plus shroud makes Nefarox an unanswerable, repeatable edict engine.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Arcane Signet) and tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to find your evasion/protection pieces consistently. Lean into a compact kill—Grafted Exoskeleton or extra-combat enablers—so games end before your 3-toughness commander dies. Round out with strong interaction (Toxic Deluge, Bojuka Bog, Dauthi Voidwalker) and reliable commander protection like Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Voltron commander damage with Exalted buffs and evasion
  • ▸Poison/infect via Grafted Exoskeleton on an unblockable Nefarox
  • ▸Attrition: strip opponents of creatures with edicts then close with drain effects
  • ▸Extra combats (Finest Hour) for explosive lone-attacker damage

Archetypes

  • Voltron — His evasion and Exalted reward loading up equipment and auras on a lone attacker.
  • Edict Control — His attack-trigger sacrifice paired with black's spot removal grinds creature-based decks out.
  • Aristocrats/Attrition — Mono-black sacrifice, drain, and recursion supports a slow attrition kill alongside his edict.
  • Reanimator — Black's reanimation can cheat threats out and rebuy Nefarox when removed.
