BuildCard details

The Commander

Partner with Yannik, Scavenging Sentinel (When this creature enters, target player may put Yannik into their hand from their library, then shuffle.)

Menace

Whenever another creature you control leaves the battlefield, if it had one or more counters on it, you draw a card and you lose 1 life.

Guide

Gameplan

Nikara turns counter-laden creatures dying or leaving into a steady stream of card advantage. You load up creatures with +1/+1 or other counters, then sacrifice, blink, or bounce them to refill your hand while draining yourself a little. With her Partner Yannik in the command zone, you can exile counter-bearing creatures and return them with counters added, looping value into a grindy aristocrats engine.

Strengths

  • Repeatable card draw that's hard to interact with—every counter creature leaving fuels a card
  • Pairs natively with Yannik for a powerful two-card command zone engine
  • Cheap three-mana commander that comes down early and immediately rewards your existing creatures
  • Menace makes her a passable evasive attacker if needed

Weaknesses

  • Mono-black means no easy access to proliferate or token-doublers outside black's narrow tools
  • The draw triggers cost life, which adds up against aggressive or burn-leaning tables
  • Reliant on counters being present—creatures with no counters trigger nothing
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate and to creature wipes that leave you behind if the engine isn't online

Key Cards

  • Yannik, Scavenging Sentinel — Her Partner exiles a counter creature and returns it with extra counters, triggering Nikara every loop.
  • The Ozolith — Banks counters from dying creatures so you can reload future creatures and keep Nikara firing.
  • Cauldron of Souls — Soulshift lets you blink your team with -1/-1 counters removed, repeatedly leaving the battlefield to draw.
  • Mikaeus, the Unhallowed — Gives non-Humans undying so they return with a +1/+1 counter, then can leave again for value.
  • Phyrexian Reclamation — Cheaply recurs your sacrificed creatures to keep feeding both the engine and the board.
  • Ashnod's Altar — Free sacrifice outlet that converts counter creatures into mana and Nikara draws simultaneously.

Upgrade Path

Lean into infinite or near-infinite loops—pair undying creatures like Mikaeus targets with a free sac outlet (Ashnod's Altar, Viscera Seer) and a Blood Artist effect for a drain kill. Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jet Medallion) and strong tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble pieces faster, and tighten the manabase with fetch-friendly black duals. Prioritize cheap, recursive counter creatures and proliferate-adjacent black tools to keep triggers flowing.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Out-grind the table with overwhelming card advantage and a wide aristocrats board
  • ▸Drain opponents with sacrifice payoffs like Blood Artist and Zulaport Cutthroat
  • ▸Beat down with menace creatures grown large by accumulated +1/+1 counters
  • ▸Assemble a sacrifice/recursion loop for incremental drain or repeatable effects

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Sacrifice outlets plus counter creatures turn death triggers into card draw and value loops.
  • Counters Matter — +1/+1 and undying/persist synergies make every creature a draw engine when it leaves.
  • Blink — Flickering counter creatures lets them leave and re-enter, drawing each time without losing the board.
  • Reanimator — Recurring big counter-bearing creatures pairs with self-mill and sac for a grindy advantage engine.
