BuildCard details

The Commander

Dragon spells you cast cost {1} less to cast.

Whenever Nogi attacks, if you control three or more Dragons, until end of turn, Nogi becomes a Dragon with base power and toughness 5/5 and gains flying.

Guide

Gameplan

Ramp aggressively into a swarm of red Dragons, using Nogi's cost reduction to deploy threats a turn ahead of schedule. Beat down with a flying Dragon army backed by haste enablers and burn, with Nogi himself joining the air assault once you control three Dragons. Close games out by going wide in the air and finishing with damage doublers or alpha strikes.

Strengths

  • Cheap commander that meaningfully reduces the cost of every Dragon spell, accelerating your whole curve
  • Mono-red gives consistent mana, strong ramp via treasure/rituals, and access to the best burn and haste enablers
  • Dragons are individually powerful evasive threats that demand answers
  • Nogi becomes a 5/5 flyer himself, adding to the clock without extra cards

Weaknesses

  • Mono-red lacks card draw and struggles to recover from board wipes
  • No protection or interaction in the command zone—relies entirely on the 99
  • Cost reduction only applies to Dragon spells, leaving support pieces full price
  • Many payoff Dragons are expensive, so a slow start or wipe can leave you topdecking
  • Vulnerable to flyer hate and cheap removal aimed at Nogi

Key Cards

  • Dragon Tempest — Gives all your Dragons haste and pings opponents each time one enters, converting your swarm into immediate damage.
  • Scourge of Valkas — Turns every Dragon you play and your existing board into a burn engine that can close games out of nowhere.
  • Terror of the Peaks — Each Dragon entering deals damage equal to its power, racking up reach and acting as removal.
  • Utvara Hellkite — Snowballs your board by making a 6/6 Dragon every time a Dragon attacks, a brutal payoff once Nogi is online.
  • Sarkhan, Fireblood — Mono-red card advantage that filters into your expensive Dragons and ramps you toward them.
  • Goldspan Dragon — Cheap evasive threat that ramps you with Treasures, feeding more Dragon spells.
  • Dragonlord's Servant — Stacks additional Dragon cost reduction with Nogi to flood the board absurdly fast.

Upgrade Path

Lean into Dragon-specific cost reducers (Dragonlord's Servant, Dragonspeaker Shaman, Cloud Key) and fast mana like Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, and ritual effects to deploy threats turns early. Add card advantage engines (Sarkhan, Fireblood; Outpost Siege; Light Up the Stage) to offset mono-red's weakness, and pack damage multipliers such as Fiery Emancipation plus protection like Heroic Intervention substitutes (Bushwhack, Tibalt's Trickery) to guard against wipes. Tighten the curve and prioritize Dragons with immediate impact—Goldspan Dragon, Glorybringer, Terror of the Peaks—over expensive vanilla fatties.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Alpha strike with an evasive Dragon army boosted by Nogi and lords
  • ▸Cumulative direct damage from Scourge of Valkas, Terror of the Peaks, and Dragon Tempest
  • ▸Snowball the board with Utvara Hellkite and overwhelm with token Dragons
  • ▸Combat damage doubled by effects like Fiery Emancipation

Archetypes

  • Dragon Tribal Aggro — Nogi cheapens Dragons and joins the swarm, enabling a fast evasive beatdown.
  • Tribal Midrange — Lord effects and ETB-payoff Dragons turn each cast into incremental value and damage.
  • Burn/Spellslinger Hybrid — Damage-on-ETB Dragons like Scourge of Valkas and Terror of the Peaks let you win through pings rather than combat.
