The Commander

Gameplan

Old Hob churns out a hasty 2/2 Mutant every combat, giving you a free attacker and a body that conveniently dies on your own end step—perfect fodder for Aristocrats payoffs and recursive value engines. You play to the board with cheap token-generators and anthems, swing wide each turn with the protection of Hob's indestructible activation, and grind opponents out with death triggers and damage. The deck wants to deploy efficiently, attack relentlessly, and turn each disposable Mutant into incremental advantage.

Strengths

  • Generates a free hasty attacker every single turn with no card investment
  • Built-in indestructible protection makes alpha strikes and combat blowouts one-sided
  • Natural, guaranteed death trigger each end step feeds Aristocrats engines
  • Boros go-wide plans love anthems, token doublers, and extra-combat effects
  • Low curve and fast clock make it strong in midrange and aggressive metas

Weaknesses

  • RW lacks card draw and ramp, so it can run out of gas in long games
  • Mutant tokens die on your own end step, blunting persistent board states

  • Token doublers and anthems are central, so removal-heavy tables punish over-extension

Upgrade Path

Lean into Aristocrats payoffs and token doublers so each Mutant's birth and death matters twice—prioritize Mondrak, Anointed Procession, Bastion of Remembrance, and free sac outlets like Goblin Bombardment. Add extra-combat enablers (Aurelia, Combat Celebrant, Moraug) and reliable anthems (Intangible Virtue, Cathars' Crusade) to convert disposable tokens into lethal swings. Shore up Boros's weaknesses with strong ramp (Smothering Tithe, mana rocks) and card advantage (Welcoming Vampire, Mentor of the Meek, Skullclamp) to avoid running dry.
