BuildCard details

The Commander

More Than Meets the Eye {2}{U}{R}{W} (You may cast this card converted for {2}{U}{R}{W}.)

At the beginning of each end step, bolster 1. (Choose a creature with the least toughness among creatures you control and put a +1/+1 counter on it.)

When Optimus Prime dies, return it to the battlefield converted under its owner's control.

Living metal (During your turn, this Vehicle is also a creature.)

Trample

Whenever you attack, bolster 2. The chosen creature gains trample until end of turn. When that creature deals combat damage to a player this turn, convert Optimus Prime.

Guide

Gameplan

Optimus Prime is a Jeskai +1/+1 counter commander that snowballs your board through bolster every end step and a beefy bolster 2 plus trample handout on each attack. You deploy creatures, attack to pump your biggest threat, and grind through removal thanks to the death-recursion that flips him back as an indestructible-feeling Vehicle. Win by overwhelming with counters and trample damage or by turning a single bolstered creature into a one-shot threat.

Strengths

  • Built-in recursion: dies and returns converted, dodging most spot removal and sacrifice effects
  • Generates free value every turn via bolster, even without attacking
  • Attack trigger pumps and grants trample, making combat math brutal
  • Living metal keeps him out of sorcery-speed removal windows on opponents' turns

Weaknesses

  • Bolster only buffs the lowest-toughness creature, so a single big threat may never get counters
  • Color-intensive RUW cost and needs creatures on board to leverage bolster
  • Vulnerable to exile, bounce, and -X/-X effects that bypass the death trigger
  • Wide board wipes reset your investment and the counter engine

Key Cards

  • Hardened Scales — Multiplies every bolster trigger, turning incremental counters into a fast clock.
  • Branching Evolution — Doubles +1/+1 counters from bolster, accelerating the snowball dramatically.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Each creature you make adds counters across the board, synergizing with token swarms and bolster.
  • The Ozolith — Banks counters when creatures die so board wipes don't waste your accumulated value.
  • Anointed Procession — Token doublers give bolster more bodies to spread counters and trample across.
  • Strionic Resonator — Copies the attack trigger for double bolster and an extra trample grant.

Upgrade Path

Add counter multipliers like Hardened Scales, Branching Evolution, and Doubling Season, plus proliferate sources to maximize bolster output. Include protection like Heroic Intervention and Teferi's Protection against wraths, and ramp such as Smothering Tithe and Talismans to cast him on curve. To push higher, lean into combo finishers like a Craterhoof-style payoff (e.g., Overwhelming Stampede) or Strionic Resonator loops to double attack triggers for a single-turn kill.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Overwhelming combat damage from a board of trampling, counter-stacked creatures
  • ▸One-shotting a player with a heavily bolstered trampler via the attack trigger
  • ▸Anthem and Cathars' Crusade snowballs that outscale every blocker

Archetypes

  • +1/+1 Counters — Bolster every end step and on attack pairs with counter doublers and proliferate for explosive growth.
  • Aggro/Voltron — Concentrating counters on one trampler turns Optimus or a chosen creature into a lethal beater.
  • Tokens/Go-Wide — Lots of small creatures give bolster fresh targets and feed anthem and crusade effects.
