Mana value5Rank#10,422
BuildCard details

The Commander

This spell costs {1} less to cast for each different mana value among cards in your graveyard.

Whenever you discard a nonland card, you may cast it from your graveyard.

Guide

Gameplan

Oskar is a discard-payoff engine: load your graveyard with varied mana values to cheapen him, then turn every discard into a free cast from the yard. You fill the bin with cantrips, wheels, and rummaging effects, then chain cheap-to-recast value spells and bombs you discarded.

Strengths

  • Turns discard 'downside' into pure card advantage and free casts
  • Often costs only {2} or less to recast after a single board wipe of value
  • Excellent with reanimator and cheap-to-recast spell engines
  • Loots aggressively to dig toward combo or answers

Weaknesses

  • Graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) shuts down both abilities
  • Fragile creature with no built-in protection, easy to remove
  • Needs discard outlets in play to actually use the cast trigger
  • Can be slow and durdly without a focused payoff plan

Key Cards

  • Faithless Looting — Cheap repeatable discard that triggers Oskar and fills the yard for his cost reduction.
  • Containment Construct — Lets you recast any card you discard, multiplying Oskar's trigger value.
  • Bone Miser — Generates mana and cards every time you discard, fueling chains of recasts.
  • The Underworld Cookbook — A repeatable discard outlet on a stick that converts surplus cards into Oskar casts.
  • Anje Falkenrath — Free, untap-driven looting that turns your graveyard into an engine alongside Oskar.

Upgrade Path

Add discard outlets that don't cost mana and graveyard-fuel like Frantic Search, Cathartic Reunion, and Tortured Existence. Lean into a tight reanimator or storm-style combo line with Underworld Breach, and run protection plus graveyard recursion to fight hate. Tune your curve to maximize distinct mana values so Oskar consistently costs near zero.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Reanimate a large threat or repeatedly recast a finisher for incremental damage
  • ▸Combo with discard loops and mana-positive payoffs like Bone Miser
  • ▸Grind out card advantage and close with a recurring bomb or commander beatdown

Archetypes

  • Reanimator — Discard outlets dump fatties and Oskar/recursion brings them back for cheap.
  • Spellslinger — Discarding instants and sorceries lets you cast them free from the yard.
  • Combo — Cheap recastable spells plus discard loops enable engine-based kills.
  • Control — Loot to answers, recur counters and removal, grind opponents out of resources.
