The Commander

{2}, {T}: Choose target creature card in your graveyard that was put there from the battlefield this turn. Return it to the battlefield tapped.

Partner—Friends forever (You can have two commanders if both have this ability.)

Guide

Gameplan

Othelm is a reanimation engine on a stick: sacrifice or trade away your creatures, then pay {2},{T} to bring them straight back tapped on your next available activation. Build a value-driven aristocrats/blink hybrid that turns every creature death into a reusable resource, chaining ETB triggers, sacrifice payoffs, and big bodies back to the battlefield over and over.

Strengths

  • Repeatable, color-cheap reanimation that doesn't require milling or hardcasting big threats
  • Synergizes with sacrifice outlets, ETB creatures, and combat trades all at once
  • Friends forever lets you pair with any second commander for color/strategy flexibility (red, blue, black, mono pairings)
  • Only a 3-mana commander, so it comes down early and is cheap to recast

Weaknesses

  • Only retrieves creatures that died THIS turn, so timing and a sac outlet are essential
  • Activation is slow (sorcery-speed-ish, taps Othelm) and easy to disrupt with graveyard hate or creature removal
  • Returns the creature tapped, leaving it vulnerable to attacks and unable to block
  • No card advantage or protection built in; needs support pieces to do real work

Key Cards

  • Viscera Seer — Free sacrifice outlet to feed creatures into the graveyard for Othelm to immediately reanimate.
  • Sun Titan — A big body you can repeatedly recur, and it recurs your own dead permanents for extra value.
  • Karmic Guide — ETB reanimator that loops perfectly with sac outlets and Othelm's recursion for combo potential.
  • Reveillark — Pairs with Karmic Guide and a sac outlet for an infinite ETB/death loop engine.
  • Sakura-Tribe Elder — Sac for ramp, then return it with Othelm to chump and ramp repeatedly.
  • Skullclamp — Turns sacrificed and dying creatures into a relentless stream of cards to fuel the engine.

Upgrade Path

Add free or cheap sacrifice outlets (Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder, Goblin Bombardment) so deaths happen on your terms, and pack aristocrats payoffs like Blood Artist and Zulaport Cutthroat to convert loops into damage. Pick a Friends forever partner that fills your gaps—Tymna for card draw or Sakashima/Thrasios for more value—and tighten the mana with fast rocks and untap effects (Thousand-Year Elixir, Aphetto Alchemist) to activate Othelm more often per turn.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Infinite ETB/death loops draining the table via Blood Artist or Zulaport Cutthroat effects
  • ▸Grinding out incremental value until you out-board everyone and swing with recurred threats
  • ▸Reanimating a finisher like Sun Titan repeatedly to bury opponents in resources
  • ▸Token or go-wide alpha strikes powered by recurring value creatures

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Sac outlets plus Othelm's reanimation create endless death-and-return loops with drain payoffs.
  • Blink/ETB Value — Recurring creatures with strong enter-the-battlefield triggers generates overwhelming card and board advantage.
  • Reanimator — Cheap, repeatable battlefield-to-battlefield recursion lets you abuse high-impact bodies that die.
  • Combo — Karmic Guide + Reveillark + a sac outlet enables infinite ETB/death loops to close games.
