BuildCard details

The Commander

Menace (This creature can't be blocked except by two or more creatures.)

Whenever another Villain you control enters, Prowler connives. (Draw a card, then discard a card. If you discarded a nonland card, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature.)

Guide

Gameplan

Prowler is a Dimir Villain-tribal aggro/midrange commander that grows itself via connive each time another Villain enters, sculpting your hand while building a menace threat. Deploy cheap Villains and ETB-flicker effects to trigger repeated connive, dig toward your payoffs, and grind card advantage while chipping in evasive damage. You win by snowballing Prowler into a beater or leveraging the card filtering to fuel graveyard/discard synergies.

Strengths

  • Built-in card filtering and selection every time a Villain enters, smoothing draws and enabling graveyard plans.
  • Menace plus accumulating +1/+1 counters makes Prowler a hard-to-block clock at just 3 mana.
  • Dimir gives access to premium interaction, recursion, and tutors to assemble engines.
  • Connive synergizes with discard-matters and reanimation payoffs.

Weaknesses

  • Villain is a young, shallow creature type, so tribal payoffs and quality bodies are limited.
  • Heavily relies on the commander being on the battlefield to extract value.
  • No innate protection; Prowler is vulnerable to removal and resetting its counters.
  • Connive only filters rather than generating raw card advantage, so it can stall without engines.

Key Cards

  • Conspiracy — Turns every creature you control into a Villain, maximizing Prowler's connive triggers.
  • Arcane Adaptation — Makes all your creatures Villains so any ETB feeds Prowler's connive engine.
  • Minion Reflector — Copies creatures on ETB for extra Villain entrances and connive triggers.
  • Conjurer's Closet — Repeatable end-step blink retriggers Villain ETBs and connive every turn.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles token Villains for more connive triggers if your build leans on tokens.
  • Coppercoat Vanguard — Cheap evasive enabler—pair tribe-anthems and lords once more Villains exist.

Upgrade Path

Lean into type-changers like Conspiracy and Arcane Adaptation so every creature triggers connive, then add blink engines (Conjurer's Closet, Ghostly Flicker) for repeatable value. Add protection (Swiftfoot Boots, Heroic Intervention) and efficient Dimir interaction/tutors to defend the engine, and pick a clear finish—either Voltron equipment or a reanimation package fed by connive discards.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage from a buffed, menace-evasive Prowler.
  • ▸Wide Villain board backed by anthems and overrun effects.
  • ▸Reanimating large threats discarded via connive.
  • ▸Grinding incremental card advantage into a value-engine lock and inevitability.

Archetypes

  • Tribal Aggro — Stacks Villains and anthems to flood the board behind an evasive, growing commander.
  • Voltron — Connive counters plus menace and equipment turn Prowler into a fast commander-damage threat.
  • Blink/Flicker — Repeatedly flickering Villains generates endless connive triggers and ETB value.
  • Reanimator — Connive's discard pitches fatties to the yard for cheap reanimation payoffs.
