BuildCard details

The Commander

{4}, {T}: Discard all the cards in your hand, then draw that many cards. You may choose an artifact or creature card with mana value 1 you discarded this way, then do the same for artifact or creature cards with mana values 2 and 3. Return those cards to the battlefield. Activate only as a sorcery.

Guide

Gameplan

Queen Kayla is a Boros engine that turns your hand into recurring value: jam cheap artifacts and ETB creatures into your hand, then activate her to refill (discard and redraw the same number) while cheating back one each of a mana value 1, 2, and 3 permanent. Spend the early game deploying impactful low-cost bodies and digging, then loop her every turn to re-trigger ETBs, build a board, and grind opponents out. You essentially get three free permanents and a fresh hand each cycle.

Strengths

  • Card-advantage neutral with massive board advantage — three permanents back plus a full hand redraw every turn
  • Synergizes with looting/discard payoffs, madness, and graveyard recursion themes
  • Recurs cheap ETB creatures and artifacts repeatedly for value engines and combos
  • Lives in fast, aggressive Boros colors with strong mana rocks at the exact values she hits
  • Resilient: even if she's killed, her ability already replaced your hand

Weaknesses

  • Costs {4} and a tap to activate, plus summoning sickness — slow to come online
  • Forces you to discard your entire hand, which can be punishing if you're holding answers or expensive bombs
  • Reliant on having relevant MV 1/2/3 artifacts and creatures in hand to maximize the return
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate and to having the discarded cards exiled before return
  • Boros struggles with raw card draw and ramp outside of treasures, so refueling between activations can lag

Key Cards

  • Dockside Extortionist — At MV2 she returns it each turn to flood you with Treasures, fueling her {4} activation and the rest of your spells.
  • Skyclave Apparition — A MV3 repeatable removal-on-a-stick that exiles a new threat every time Kayla brings it back.
  • Solemn Simulacrum — While MV4 is just outside her range, its ramp and card draw show the kind of ETB value engine the deck wants — pair with MV1-3 equivalents.
  • Faithless Looting — Stocks your graveyard and hand with the right creatures while smoothing draws into Kayla fodder.
  • Goblin Welder — A MV1 artifact-swapping engine she can recur to abuse your artifact suite alongside her returns.
  • Bishop of Wings — A cheap engine creature that turns recurring ETB loops into life gain and angel tokens for a board-based win.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and Treasure generation (Dockside Extortionist, Jeska's Will, treasure rocks) so you can activate Kayla the turn she lands and multiple times per turn. Tighten the creature curve to maximize MV 1/2/3 ETB and combo pieces, and add reliable card filtering (Faithless Looting effects, wheels) to keep your hand stocked. Push power by including a recurring loop finisher and protection like Swiftfoot Boots or Lightning Greaves to keep her safe and untapped.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Grind out incremental advantage with looping ETB creatures and removal until opponents run dry
  • ▸Go wide with recurring token-makers and finish with an anthem or Boros aggro alpha strike
  • ▸Assemble an ETB/sacrifice loop (e.g. recurred drain creatures with a sac outlet) for repeatable damage
  • ▸Use recurred Dockside/Treasure engines to ramp into a big payoff or combo finish

Archetypes

  • Reanimator (small-creature) — She repeatedly cheats MV1-3 artifacts and creatures from hand onto the battlefield for free.
  • ETB Value/Blink-style — Returning the same ETB creatures every turn mimics flicker value, re-triggering effects like removal and ramp.
  • Artifacts — She targets artifact cards too, recurring rocks, Treasure makers, and Goblin Welder shenanigans.
  • Aristocrats — Returned bodies pair with sacrifice outlets and death triggers for a drain-and-rebuild loop.
