BuildCard details

The Commander

Whenever Radagast or another nontoken creature you control enters, look at the top X cards of your library, where X is that creature's mana value. You may reveal a creature card that doesn't share a creature type with a creature you control from among those cards and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.

Guide

Gameplan

Flood the board with diverse creatures to trigger Radagast's dig, refilling your hand and outvaluing the table through sheer card advantage. Each nontoken creature that enters digs up to its mana value deep for a creature of a new type, so you snowball into bigger threats and overwhelm opponents with green's mana ramp and beaters. You win the long game by never running out of gas.

Strengths

  • Generates massive card advantage off normal creature plays at no extra cost
  • Rewards big-mana-value creatures by digging deeper, synergizing with green's ramp
  • Refills your hand to grind out attrition and control matchups
  • Cheap commander that comes online immediately and triggers on its own entry

Weaknesses

  • The 'different creature type' restriction can fizzle digs in tribal-heavy or narrow lists
  • Card selection only, not raw card advantage—you still need creatures to draw into creatures
  • Mono-green means weak interaction, no counterspells, and limited removal
  • Triggers care about nontoken creatures, so token strategies don't synergize
  • Relies on a board presence that's vulnerable to wraths

Key Cards

  • Cloudstone Curio — Bounce and replay creatures to retrigger Radagast's dig repeatedly each turn.
  • Craterhoof Behemoth — High-mana-value finisher whose entry digs eight-plus cards while ending the game.
  • Temur Sabertooth — Repeatable creature blinking to refire Radagast triggers and protect threats.
  • Cavalier of Thorns — Big body that mills/ramps and triggers a deep five-card dig on entry.
  • Conjurer's Closet — Free blink each turn to retrigger the dig on your best creature.
  • Selvala, Heart of the Wilds — Explosive ramp that fuels casting expensive, type-diverse creatures.

Upgrade Path

Add cheap repeatable blink and bounce effects (Cloudstone Curio, Conjurer's Closet, Temur Sabertooth) to multiply Radagast's triggers each turn, and maximize creature-type diversity so digs rarely whiff. Upgrade your mana base with fast green ramp (Selvala, Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Carpet of Flowers) to cast expensive high-MV creatures sooner for deeper digs. Cap it off with green protection like Heroic Intervention and a compact Craterhoof/Finale of Devastation win package.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Craterhoof Behemoth or Pathbreaker Ibex overrun finish
  • ▸Grinding opponents out with overwhelming creature card advantage
  • ▸Creature-based combo loops (e.g., Temur Sabertooth + mana dorks for arbitrarily large mana)
  • ▸Beating down with a wide, diverse, ever-replenishing board

Archetypes

  • Midrange Value Creatures — Radagast turns every fair creature into card selection, fueling a grindy goodstuff build.
  • Blink/Flicker — Repeatedly re-entering nontoken creatures stacks multiple digs per turn.
  • Big Mana Stompy — High-MV creatures dig the deepest and ramp leads into game-ending fatties.
  • Toolbox Combo — Reliable digging assembles creature-based combos and finds the right answer each turn.
