BuildCard details

The Commander

Whenever Ragavan deals combat damage to a player, create a Treasure token and exile the top card of that player's library. Until end of turn, you may cast that card.

Dash {1}{R} (You may cast this spell for its dash cost. If you do, it gains haste, and it's returned from the battlefield to its owner's hand at the beginning of the next end step.)

Guide

Gameplan

Drop Ragavan turn one (or dash him repeatedly), connect for early combat damage to ramp on Treasures and steal cards off opponents' libraries, then snowball that tempo into a fast mono-red aggro or burn finish before slower decks stabilize. You're racing to deal 21 commander damage or simply curving out faster than the table.

Strengths

  • One-mana commander that immediately pressures life totals and generates ramp/card advantage on hit
  • Dash sidesteps removal and resets summoning sickness, keeping him on the battlefield cheaply
  • Treasure generation enables explosive turns and fixes for splashy stolen cards
  • Excellent in fast, low-curve mono-red shells with strong recovery

Weaknesses

  • Tiny 2/1 body that dies to nearly any blocker, ping, or sweeper
  • Needs to connect to do anything, so single blockers and deathtouch shut him down
  • Mono-red lacks card draw and reliable interaction compared to other colors
  • Falls behind in grindy multiplayer pods if the early aggression stalls

Key Cards

  • Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer — The engine itself—every connection means a Treasure and a free card, snowballing tempo.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Grants evasion and protection so Ragavan connects reliably while untapping your lands for explosive follow-ups.
  • Embercleave — Treasures help flash it in cheaply, turning Ragavan or your team into a lethal threat.
  • Fireshrieker — Double strike doubles Ragavan triggers, generating two Treasures and two stolen cards per swing.
  • Goldspan Dragon — Synergizes with Ragavan's Treasures, doubling their value and adding a hasty evasive beater.
  • Dockside Extortionist — Converts the table's artifacts and enchantments into a flood of Treasures for explosive ramp.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and protection: Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Jeweled Lotus, and cheap haste/evasion enablers so Ragavan connects on turn one. Lean into Treasure payoffs like Goldspan Dragon, Professional Face-Breaker, and Reckless Fireweaver, and tighten the curve with efficient equipment (Lightning Greaves, Skullclamp) plus mono-red staples like Dockside Extortionist and Underworld Breach combos to raise the ceiling.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸21 commander damage via equipment-boosted, evasive Ragavan
  • ▸Wide or tall mono-red aggro beatdown backed by Treasure ramp
  • ▸Burn finish powered by stolen cards and extra mana
  • ▸Big mana payoffs (e.g., Comet Storm or stolen bombs) fueled by Dockside/Treasures

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Cheap equipment and evasion turn Ragavan into a one-shot commander-damage threat that resets via dash.
  • Aggro — His low cost and Treasure ramp fuel a hyper-aggressive mono-red curve-out plan.
  • Spellslinger — Treasures and stolen cards fund a burn-and-impulse-draw deck that closes with direct damage.
  • Stax/Hatebears — Mono-red prison pieces protect his early lead while you grind opponents out.
