The Commander

Instant and sorcery spells you cast cost {1} less to cast.

Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell during your turn, flip a coin. If you lose the flip, Ral deals 1 damage to you. If you win the flip, you may exile Ral. If you do, return him to the battlefield transformed under his owner's control.

Ral enters with an additional loyalty counter on him for each instant and sorcery spell you've cast this turn.

+1: Until your next turn, instant and sorcery spells you cast cost {1} less to cast.

−2: Ral deals 2 damage divided as you choose among one or two targets. Draw a card if you control a blue permanent other than Ral.

−8: Exile the top eight cards of your library. You may cast instant and sorcery spells from among them this turn without paying their mana costs.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast a high density of cheap instants and sorceries, leveraging Ral's cost reduction to chain spells, win coin flips to transform him into a planeswalker, then snowball loyalty and card advantage. You burn opponents incrementally with -2 while drawing into more spells, ultimately landing the -8 ultimate to dump a free flurry of spells for a game-ending turn.

Strengths

  • Two-mana commander that immediately makes your entire spell suite cheaper
  • Transforming into a planeswalker provides repeatable card advantage and removal
  • -8 ultimate can chain free spells into a combo or burst kill
  • Excellent in low-curve spellslinger builds that flood the board with cantrips

Weaknesses

  • Coin-flip dependency means transformation and self-damage are unreliable
  • Self-damage from lost flips can pressure your own life total in fast metas
  • Planeswalker side is vulnerable to creature attacks once flipped
  • Only two colors limits access to broad interaction and ramp
  • Spell-heavy decks can run low on board presence and stabilizing threats

Key Cards

  • Krark's Thumb — Doubles your coin-flip odds so you almost always win the flip to transform Ral and avoid self-damage.
  • Mystic Forge — Lets you cast spells off the top of your library, fueling a relentless chain of cheap instants and sorceries.
  • Thousand-Year Storm — Copies every instant and sorcery you cast, turning Ral's cheap spells into a torrent of damage and value.
  • Underworld Breach — Recurs your cheap spells from the graveyard for storm-style chains that can close the game.
  • Aetherflux Reservoir — Caps off a long spell chain with a 50-life laser to kill the table.
  • Birgi, God of Storytelling — Generates red mana on every cast to power explosive spellslinger turns.

Upgrade Path

Add coin-flip manipulation like Krark's Thumb and fast mana such as Mana Crypt, Jeska's Will, and rituals to enable explosive turns. Lean into free-cast and recursion engines (Underworld Breach, Mystic Forge, Aetherflux Reservoir) for a true combo finish, and tighten the curve so nearly every nonland is a cheap instant or sorcery. Round out with efficient interaction like Pongify, Swan Song, and Counterspell to protect your chains.
