BuildCard details

The Commander

Disappear — At the beginning of your end step, if a permanent left the battlefield under your control this turn, create a 1/1 black Rat creature token and put a +1/+1 counter on Rat King.

{T}, Sacrifice three Rats: Return target creature card and all other cards with the same name as that card from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped.

Guide

Gameplan

You flood the board with Rats—especially copies of Relentless Rats, Rat Colony, and Persistent Petitioners—while constantly sacrificing and recurring permanents so Disappear fires each turn to make more Rats and grow your commander. Once you have a critical mass, Verminister's activated ability mass-reanimates a whole pile of identically-named creatures from your graveyard, and you close with overwhelming Rat-based aggro, an aristocrats drain, or a swarm beatdown.

Strengths

  • Generates a self-sustaining token engine that fuels both wide boards and sacrifice synergies
  • Mass-reanimates entire stacks of same-named creatures (Relentless Rats, etc.) for explosive board states
  • Cheap 2-mana commander that grows itself and rebuilds quickly after wipes
  • Mono-black gives access to the best tutors, recursion, and edict/removal in the format

Weaknesses

  • Very dependent on having Rats to sacrifice—board wipes can stall the whole engine
  • Disappear requires a permanent to leave each turn, so you must actively feed it sacrifice fodder
  • Mono-black struggles with enchantment/artifact removal and lacks card-draw outside of life payment
  • Activated reanimation is slow (taps, costs three Rats) and telegraphed to opponents

Key Cards

  • Relentless Rats — You can run any number, and reanimating the whole stack with Verminister returns all copies at once for a massive board.
  • Pack Rat — Turns excess cards into Rats and scales the entire team, giving you constant fodder and a finisher.
  • Ashnod's Altar — Sacrifices Rats for mana while guaranteeing a permanent left the battlefield to trigger Disappear every turn.
  • Marrow-Gnawer — Doubles your Rat production and can sacrifice a Rat to make a huge swarm, perfectly feeding the engine.
  • Skullclamp — Draws two cards every time a 1/1 Rat dies, turning your token engine into a relentless card-advantage machine.
  • Phyrexian Reclamation — Recurs sacrificed creatures cheaply, keeping the graveyard stocked for Verminister's mass-reanimation.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and sac outlets (Ashnod's Altar, Phyrexian Altar, Viscera Seer) so Disappear triggers reliably and fuels reanimation. Lean into tribal payoffs and card draw—Skullclamp, Coat of Arms, Shadows of the Past—and tutors like Demonic Tutor and Diabolic Intent to assemble combos. For higher power, include Gravecrawler/Bloodghast loops with a free sac outlet and a Blood Artist effect to drain the table out of nowhere.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Swing wide with a buffed Rat army backed by anthems like Coat of Arms or Door of Destinies
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, and repeated Rat sacrifices
  • ▸Mass-reanimate dozens of same-named creatures for an overwhelming board, then alpha strike
  • ▸Commander damage from a heavily counter-stacked Verminister

Archetypes

  • Rat Tribal — Verminister rewards stacking unlimited-count Rats like Relentless Rats and Rat Colony, then mass-reanimating them.
  • Aristocrats — Disappear loves things leaving the battlefield, pairing perfectly with sac outlets and death-trigger payoffs.
  • Reanimator — The activated ability returns whole stacks of identically-named creatures from your graveyard to the battlefield.
  • Tokens/Go-Wide — Constant Rat generation plus anthem effects creates a lethal swarm.
