The Commander

More Than Meets the Eye {1}{W} (You may cast this card converted for {1}{W}.)

Lifelink

Whenever you gain life, you may convert Ratchet. When you do, return target artifact card with mana value less than or equal to the amount of life you gained this turn from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped.

Living metal (During your turn, this Vehicle is also a creature.)

Lifelink

Whenever one or more nontoken artifacts you control are put into a graveyard from the battlefield, convert Ratchet. This ability triggers only once each turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Ratchet is a mono-white artifact reanimator that loops dead artifacts back to the battlefield by gaining life. Cast cheap as the Field Medic side, gain life through lifelink and other sources, then convert to return artifacts from your graveyard whose mana value is at or below the life gained that turn. Build a board of value artifacts, sacrifice or trade them away, and recur them repeatedly to grind out card and board advantage before closing with artifact synergies.

Strengths

  • Persistent artifact recursion gives strong grind and resilience against board wipes
  • Lifelink on both faces makes lifegain triggers easy to enable for the convert ability
  • Cheap to cast and easy to flip back and forth, abusing both triggers
  • Mono-white gives access to top-tier artifact and lifegain support plus efficient removal

Weaknesses

  • Recursion is capped by life gained in a turn, limiting which artifacts you can return
  • Mono-white struggles with raw card draw and ramp compared to other colors
  • Vehicle side only attacks/blocks on your turn via living metal, so it's a vulnerable body
  • Heavily reliant on having artifacts in the graveyard and lifegain enablers to function

Key Cards

  • Sword of the Animist — Cheap artifact that ramps and can be looped back for repeated land fetches.
  • Aetherflux Reservoir — Turns your lifegain engine into a direct win condition and fuels big convert returns.
  • Solemn Simulacrum — Recurring it draws cards and ramps every time you bring it back from the yard.
  • Bolas's Citadel — Powerful artifact whose life loss pairs with lifegain swings to recur high-value pieces.
  • Crucible of Worlds — Cheap artifact value engine that's easy to return and snowballs lands.
  • Disciple of the Vault — Aristocrats payoff that drains opponents as artifacts die and recur.
  • Sun Titan — Stacks with Ratchet to reanimate small permanents and chain recursion.

Upgrade Path

Add efficient artifact sacrifice outlets (Krark-Clan Ironworks, Ashnod's Altar) to trigger the death-flip on demand and recur value engines each turn. Increase lifegain density (Soul Warden effects, Well of Lost Dreams) to raise your convert ceiling and draw cards, and tighten the curve toward high-impact artifacts. Top end can lean into a Aetherflux Reservoir or Time Sieve/Thopter combo finish for a faster, more deterministic kill.
