BuildCard details

The Commander

Menace

Whenever Reno and Rude deals combat damage to a player, exile the top card of that player's library. Then you may sacrifice another creature or artifact. If you do, you may play the exiled card this turn, and mana of any type can be spent to cast it.

Guide

Gameplan

Suit up Reno and Rude as an efficient 2-mana evasive beater, connect with menace to steal cards off opponents' libraries, then sacrifice fodder creatures and artifacts to actually cast those stolen cards for free (any mana). You build a sacrifice/aristocrats shell that turns cheap tokens and treasures into fuel, grinding card advantage and stealing opponents' bombs while chipping away with combat damage.

Strengths

  • Cheap, recastable evasive commander that comes down turn two and threatens immediate value
  • Mono-black gives access to the best tutors, ramp rocks, and recursion
  • Turns combat damage into repeatable theft of opponents' best cards, casting them with any mana
  • Synergizes naturally with sacrifice fodder you already run, doubling up on aristocrats triggers

Weaknesses

  • Stolen card is random off the top, so the value is inconsistent and table-dependent
  • Needs to connect in combat each turn, making it weak to removal, fogs, and blockers despite menace
  • Mono-black struggles with enchantment and artifact removal and lacks flexible interaction
  • Requires both a sacrifice outlet of fodder AND a connection, so it can stall without setup

Key Cards

  • Whip of Erebos — Lifelink keeps you alive through aggression and you can reanimate creatures to throw at the sac trigger.
  • Bitterblossom — A steady stream of flying tokens gives you reliable sacrifice fodder every turn for the ability.
  • Skullclamp — Cheap artifact you can sacrifice to the trigger while converting your token fodder into cards.
  • Nim Deathmantle — Combos with token generators to give you endless recursion fuel and reanimate your sacrificed creatures.
  • Ophiomancer — Makes a deathtouch Snake every upkeep, providing perpetual free fodder for both saccing and blocking.
  • Phyrexian Altar — Free sacrifice outlet that also ramps, letting you fuel the steal trigger and cast big stolen cards.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and rocks (Sol Ring, Dark Ritual, Bubbling Muck) plus tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble your sac engine faster. Lean into free sacrifice outlets (Phyrexian Altar, Viscera Seer) and token engines (Bitterblossom, Pawn of Ulamog) so you always have fodder, then add evasion/protection (Whispersilk Cloak, Lightning Greaves) to guarantee the commander connects. Top end with aristocrats payoffs and a reanimation package to convert stolen and sacrificed creatures into recurring advantage.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Grind value off stolen cards until you out-resource the table and close with repeated commander damage
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, and mass sacrifice loops
  • ▸Casting an opponent's game-ending bomb (a powerful creature or sweeper) stolen off their library
  • ▸Voltron commander-damage kills after stacking evasion and pump

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — The sacrifice clause rewards a fodder-heavy board, so death triggers and recursion engines run parallel to its ability.
  • Theft/Stax-light — It steals opponents' top cards and casts them, letting you weaponize their own bombs while denying them resources.
  • Voltron — Cheap menace body wants evasion and combat enablers to reliably connect and trigger the exile-and-cast value.
  • Reanimator — Sacrificed creatures feed graveyard recursion, and you can throw back-from-the-dead bodies into the sac outlet.
