The Commander

Vigilance, trample, haste

Whenever Rhino attacks, if you've cast a spell with mana value 4 or greater this turn, draw a card.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast big, splashy spells every turn to power out Rhino and a board of fatties, then beat down with a hasty, trampling, vigilant 7-drop that refills your hand each combat. You ramp hard early, deploy big creatures and giant Gruul spells from turn 4 onward, and use Rhino's vigilance to attack while staying back on defense.

Strengths

  • Vigilance, trample, and haste make Rhino immediately threatening and hard to race
  • Built-in card advantage rewards a curve already full of impactful big spells
  • Gruul ramp lets you cast multiple 4+ MV spells per turn, snowballing fast
  • Trample and big bodies punch through chump blockers and clog

Weaknesses

  • Seven-mana commander is expensive and vulnerable to removal/recasting tax
  • Draw trigger needs both a 4+ MV cast that turn AND a successful attack
  • No evasion beyond trample; flyers and pillow-fort decks slow you
  • Color identity lacks strong interaction, so you fold to fast combo and stax

Key Cards

  • Cultivate — Cheap ramp and fixing that accelerates you to your expensive 4+ MV payoff spells.
  • Etali, Primal Storm — A huge attacker that free-casts more big spells, easily turning on Rhino's draw trigger.
  • Apex Devastator — Massive trampler whose cascade chain reliably fires big spells to fuel card draw.
  • Garruk's Uprising — Trample plus draw-on-power-four-or-greater stacks perfectly with Rhino's payoff.
  • Xenagos, God of Revels — Doubles power and grants haste, making Rhino a one-swing threat that connects for cards.
  • Worldspine Wurm — An iconic giant payoff that closes games and triggers your big-spell synergies.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the curve so every threat is also a 4+ MV payoff and add reliable enablers like cascade and free-cast effects (Maelstrom Wanderer, Etali) to guarantee the draw trigger. Improve ramp quality with Sol Ring, fast mana, and treasure makers to cast multiple big spells per turn, and add haste/double-strike doublers plus protection like Heroic Intervention to keep Rhino connecting.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Beating down with Rhino and a board of trampling fatties
  • ▸Card-advantage engine out-grinding opponents then alpha-striking
  • ▸Doubling/anthem effects (Xenagos, Berserkers' Onslaught) turning one swing lethal

Archetypes

  • Big Mana / Ramp — Rhino rewards casting expensive spells, so accelerating into a steady stream of 4+ MV bombs is the core plan.
  • Stompy Aggro — Haste, trample, and vigilance let Rhino lead a fast, resilient creature beatdown.
  • Cascade / Free-Spell value — Cascade and impulse-cast effects guarantee 4+ MV casts each turn to switch on the draw trigger.
