BuildCard details

The Commander

Flash

When Rhys enters, another target creature you control gains persist until end of turn. (When it dies, if it had no -1/-1 counters on it, return it to the battlefield under its owner's control with a -1/-1 counter on it.)

{W}, {T}: Remove any number of counters from target creature you control. Activate only as a sorcery.

Guide

Gameplan

Rhys is a 2-mana mono-white engine that hands out temporary persist and then erases the -1/-1 counters, effectively giving a creature a free extra life or enabling repeatable death-trigger loops. You flash him in to protect a key creature, sacrifice/blink for value, then strip counters at sorcery speed to reset the loop. The deck grinds incremental advantage through sacrifice payoffs, ETB creatures, and counter shenanigans before closing with a wide board or a combo.

Strengths

  • Cheap, flashable commander that protects your best creature at instant speed
  • Built-in counter removal turns persist into infinite-loop fuel with sac outlets
  • Strong synergy with aristocrats and ETB/death triggers in mono-white
  • Counter-removal ability also clears stun, age, and other harmful counters

Weaknesses

  • Mono-white means weak card draw and limited ramp
  • Counter-removal is sorcery-speed and only one Rhys, so loops are fragile to interaction
  • No built-in evasion or finisher—relies heavily on support pieces
  • Persist only lasts until end of turn, limiting the protection window

Key Cards

  • Viscera Seer — Free sacrifice outlet that, combined with Rhys removing the persist counter each turn, enables value loops.
  • Blasting Station — Sacrifice + persist + counter removal creates a repeatable damage engine to close games.
  • Skullclamp — Mono-white's best card draw, turning persisting and dying creatures into a steady stream of cards.
  • Reveillark — Recurs your small ETB creatures and pairs with persist for grindy value engines.
  • Sun Titan — Reanimates Rhys and other low-cost pieces to rebuild loops after disruption.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles tokens generated by your wide aristocrats and ETB synergies for explosive boards.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and white ramp (Sol Ring, Smothering Tithe, Mind Stone) to offset mono-white's slow start, and tighten the combo line with free sac outlets like Carrion Feeder plus a payoff such as Blasting Station. Improve card advantage with Welcoming Vampire, Esper Sentinel, and Skullclamp, and add protection like Swords to Plowshares and Teferi's Protection to defend your engine.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Infinite aristocrat loops with a free sac outlet, Blasting Station, or similar payoff
  • ▸Wide token board pumped by anthems and overrun effects

  • ▸Commander damage or persistent value attrition outlasting opponents

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Persist plus counter removal turns sacrifice outlets and death triggers into repeatable value or combo loops.
  • Blink — Rhys protects and resets creatures with strong ETB effects for ongoing card and board advantage.
  • Combo — Pairing a free sac outlet with a death payoff and Rhys's counter strip enables near-infinite loops.
  • Tokens — Mono-white go-wide strategies use Rhys to protect anthem creatures and grind through removal.
