BuildCard details

The Commander

Rigo enters with a shield counter on it. (If it would be dealt damage or destroyed, remove a shield counter from it instead.)

Whenever you attack a player or planeswalker with one or more creatures with power 1 or less, draw a card.

Guide

Gameplan

Rigo turns a wide board of small, evasive creatures into a card-advantage engine, drawing a card per attacked player/planeswalker each combat. You flood the board with power-1-or-less creatures, attack into multiple opponents to refill your hand, and then overwhelm with anthems, tokens, or a finisher once you've buried the table in cards.

Strengths

  • Massive repeatable card draw just for attacking, scaling with multiplayer pods
  • Built-in protection via a shield counter makes Rigo hard to remove on attack
  • Cheap, three-color base that supports go-wide, tokens, and +1/+1 counter shells
  • Small creatures dodge most board wipes' relevance since you rebuild fast off draws

Weaknesses

  • Anthem effects can push your team above power 1, shutting off the draw trigger
  • Relies on attacking, so Fog, mass blockers, and pillowfort hurt the engine
  • Card draw means little if you can't convert it into pressure or a win
  • Vulnerable to sweepers if you overextend before establishing card advantage

Key Cards

  • Skullclamp — Turns your endless 1-power creatures into a card-draw machine that synergizes with the small-creature theme.
  • Coastal Piracy — Stacks even more card draw on top of Rigo whenever your creatures connect.
  • Intangible Virtue — Pumps tokens' toughness and power but be careful—anthems can disable Rigo's trigger, so it must be used selectively.
  • Esper Sentinel — A premier power-1 creature that draws extra cards and pressures opponents' noncreature spells.
  • Adeline, Resplendent Cathar — Generates a wide army of 1/1 tokens that perfectly feed Rigo's attack trigger across the table.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and cheap card-quality (Sol Ring, Esper Sentinel, Smothering Tithe) to deploy boards faster, and lean on token producers that stay at power 1 so anthems don't shut off Rigo. Tighten the curve with evasive one-drops and add a decisive finisher like Craterhoof Behemoth or an aristocrats drain combo to convert your card advantage into a win before opponents stabilize.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Go-wide alpha strike backed by anthems like Craterhoof Behemoth or Overrun
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist effects with sacrifice fodder
  • ▸Out-card-advantage the table and grind out incremental beatdown
  • ▸Combo finish enabled by the deep card flow (e.g., Cathars' Crusade engines)

Archetypes

  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Floods the board with cheap power-1 creatures to maximize attackers and draw triggers.
  • +1/+1 Counters — Bant counter synergies grow small bodies while keeping a token base to trigger Rigo.
  • Aristocrats — Small expendable creatures pair with sacrifice payoffs and Skullclamp-style draw loops.
  • Spellslinger Tempo — Cheap evasive utility creatures plus card draw fuel a control-leaning value plan.
