BuildCard details

The Commander

Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, you may pay {U}{R}. If you do, copy that spell. You may choose new targets for the copy.

Whenever another nontoken creature you control enters, you may pay {G}{U}. If you do, create a token that's a copy of that creature.

Guide

Gameplan

Riku doubles your value engines: copying every instant/sorcery and cloning creatures that enter for incremental advantage that snowballs into overwhelming board presence or a lethal spell. You ramp early, deploy Riku and a few payoffs, then chain copied spells and tokens until you bury opponents in card advantage or assemble a combo. Most games end via a doubled X-spell, a swarm of copied threats, or an infinite loop.

Strengths

  • Doubles both spells and creature ETBs, generating exceptional card and board advantage
  • Plays in the deep Temur ramp/value shell with strong mana acceleration
  • Flexible—supports combo, tokens, and spellslinger lines from one card
  • Copies let you split targets across multiple opponents efficiently

Weaknesses

  • Riku's copies cost real mana ({U}{R} or {G}{U}) every time, so you can be mana-starved
  • Heavily commander-dependent; removal-heavy tables shut the engine off
  • No built-in protection or evasion—Riku dies to everything
  • Five mana and fragile means slow starts against fast combo decks

Key Cards

  • Cyclonic Rift — Copying an overloaded Rift wraps up the game and the copy can hit a second board state's worth of permanents.
  • Doubling Season — Riku's creature copies and any token spells double again, exploding your board.
  • Mystic Reflection — Pairs with Riku to turn any creature ETB into copies of your bombs.
  • Birthing Pod — Each fetched creature triggers Riku's clone, accelerating your toolbox and combo pieces.
  • Palinchron — With untap effects or Riku copies it enables infinite mana to fuel everything.
  • Dockside Extortionist — Copying it with Riku doubles the treasures and fuels explosive turns.

Upgrade Path

Lean into a tight combo package—Palinchron/Peregrine Drake plus untappers, or Dramatic Reversal with Isochron Scepter—to convert Riku's copies into game-ending loops. Add more cheap interaction (Swan Song, Counterspell, Pongify) and protection (Heroic Intervention, Lightning Greaves) to keep Riku online, and prioritize fast mana like Mana Crypt and Jeweled Lotus to outpace removal. Trim clunky value cards for low-curve enablers so you can pay Riku's copy costs every turn.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Doubled big X-spell (e.g., Comet Storm, Fireball) for the table
  • ▸Overwhelming swarm of copied creatures with anthems or evasion
  • ▸Infinite mana combo (Palinchron/Peregrine Drake) into a copied draw/burn spell
  • ▸Repeatable ETB loops generating infinite damage or tokens

Archetypes

  • Spellslinger — Riku copies every instant and sorcery for free value or doubled burn/draw.
  • Combo — Copied creatures and spells assemble infinite mana, ETB, or storm loops.
  • Tokens — Cloning nontoken creatures floods the board, especially with anthems and doublers.
  • Value/Midrange — Doubling ETBs and card draw out-grinds opponents over a long game.
