Guide

Gameplan

Riven Turnbull is a Friends Forever commander best paired with a blue partner to make a Dimir shell that weaponizes paying and losing life. The full card gains you life and draws you cards equal to the life you lost that turn, so you intentionally drain yourself with painlands, fetches, and life-payment spells, then flicker or recast Riven to refill your hand. Use that card advantage to grind out a control game and assemble a payoff that converts excess cards/life into a kill.

Strengths

  • Explosive card draw and lifegain when you've front-loaded life loss the same turn
  • Functions as a mana dork producing black even before its value triggers
  • Dimir gives access to the format's best counterspells, removal, and tutors
  • Self-synergistic with painful card draw and life-payment effects you'd run anyway

Weaknesses

  • At seven mana the ETB does nothing if you haven't lost life that turn
  • Body is fragile and the value is gated behind re-casting or blinking it
  • Heavily reliant on a good blue Friends Forever partner to access half the deck
  • Color-screw and removal-heavy tables blunt the engine quickly

Key Cards

  • Necropotence — Pay life to draw, then cast Riven to recoup that life and draw again off the same loss.
  • Bolas's Citadel — Casting off the top pays life all turn, supercharging Riven's enter-the-battlefield count.
  • Ad Nauseam — Massive intentional life loss turns Riven into an enormous draw-and-regain refill.
  • Ghostly Flicker — Reusable blink lets you re-trigger Riven's gain-and-draw every turn cycle.
  • Sheoldred, the Apocalypse — Punishes opponents' draws while gaining you life to offset your self-damage engine.

Upgrade Path

Lean into fast mana (Mana Crypt, Dark Ritual) and efficient tutors to deploy Riven earlier and chain its triggers. Add a tight win combo such as Thassa's Oracle plus Demonic Consultation or Tainted Pact so all the card advantage actually closes games, and choose a high-impact blue partner (like one with its own engine) to maximize the shell's consistency.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Assemble a Dimir combo (e.g., Thassa's Oracle with Demonic Consultation) off the deep card advantage
  • ▸Grind opponents out with recurring value and a few evasive finishers
  • ▸Drain the table with payoffs like Sheoldred or Exsanguinate fueled by your life total

Archetypes

  • Control — Dimir counters and removal protect you while Riven refuels your hand for the long game.
  • Combo — Card-advantage glut and tutors let you reliably find a compact two-card kill.
  • Lifeloss Value — Riven turns paying life into a tangible draw-and-gain payoff to fuel the whole deck.
  • Blink — Repeated flickering of Riven converts each turn's life loss into stacked card advantage.
